Now, Juice, you are trying to stir the pot so I hope everyone ignores your inquiries.
I didn't realize this was such a sensitive topic, but you are the second person to tell me this so I guess it is.  I thought I could just have a rational football conversation without the smack talk.

Not sure if you are going to get all those that were questioning Stig to show up now and change their mind. At least not yet anyways.

A lot were doubting the coaches decision to stick with Kardoes, I being one of them. The story in the winning 2pt. conversion should erase all doubt that Andy has stepped up as the leader of this team and Stig has faith in him. What else would you want from you QB in that moment? It's almost a cliche movie ending.

I think we found more about the team and staff's character because of an 0-3 start. Kudos to all and am looking forward to their warm welcome on Hobo Day!

After The Game Which Shall Not Be Mentioned, I said that it was the kind of game that gets coaches fired. I was not comfortable making the statement at the time, but I'll stand by it, because I believe it is a true statement--I-AA schools should never, ever lose on their home field to D-III teams. But perhaps that loss was necessary for this team to become what they are becoming. You-Know-Who works in mysterious ways.

The recovery of these Jackrabbits from their horrendous start, the character and focus they've shown playing the schedule they've had, and the determination that's apparent in their big comeback win yesterday is the kind of recovery that gets coaches' contracts renewed.

It's worth contemplating for a moment the strength of character which allows someone to put their employment future in the hands of a bunch of 20-year-old young adults, getting them to work together, and succeeding (or failing) with them week in and week out.

I suppose that's why a few people become coaches, while most people are fans posting on bulletin boards like this one.

I'm looking forward to seeing this group of Jackrabbits in person for the first time next week at Hobo Day, in a way that I haven't looked forward to a Hobo Day football game in a long, long time.

Well I know that this is a day late, but I just got back from Cal-Poly and did not have internet access while I was there, but here it is anyway. That was probably the best football game I have ever seen live. The Jacks really held there own and really showed the Cal-Poly faithful what a great team they are and what a wonderful University SDSU is. I was sitting amongst all the Cal-Poly fans and I only saw one SDSU fan within 30 yards of me.

On the play that Kardoes was hurt, I did not see the hit because I was watching the flight of the ball, but the guy next to me said he got killed. He kept saying that he was done and he would not play anymore that night. I told him that he went to the hospital in an ambulance against McNeese state, came back from the hospital and scored the winning touchdown. I told him that Andy had been hit harder than that and come back, he would come back again. Once it became 4th down, Andy grabbed his helmet, sprinted 30 yards to Stig and made the jesture that he was ready to play. He came in and threw a TD. I told the guy next to me, "I told you he would come back". He just shrugged in disgust. At that moment I knew we would win the game, that took all of the air out of Cal-Poly.

I just want to thank all of the players for State for a wonderful and entertaining game and a great weekend. I will be smiling all week. Thanks again.

Unbelievable, thats all I can say. Only wish I could have been there. Amazing display by the offense in the 4th quarter. Just helps prove the point that those who know the business run it and those who don't often make foolish comments and are proven wrong in the end. Kardoes was the man again this weekend, Stig knows his business. It was a proud day to be a Jackrabbit once again.

I feel a little sheepish in that I was out eating when I received a call telling me the Jacks had won. My dad was in town so we took him and his wife out for supper. We had to leave with the game just starting the second half. Considering that I told anyone and everyone who would listen that I knew we were going to win this game from the beginning of the season, I feel bad that I wasn't listening when it happened. I am glad it happened and will echo the doc's (if he's really a doc ) statement in that I'm proud to be a Jackrabbit.

I know this has been posted elsewhere but it also seemed to make sense to place it here as well.  Wow, a preview story of the game, a story about the game, and now a follow up to the game, that is what I am talking about as far a D-I coverage.  Nice job to Terry and the Argus!

Win over Cal Poly ranks as historic

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Even in the euphoric aftermath of Saturday's stunning 29-28 victory at No. 4-ranked Cal Poly, South Dakota State football coach John Stiegelmeier stood by his convictions, denying that there was a turning point during his team's 23-point rally and furthermore dismissing the concept of the turning point as reporter-speak.

Belief, he said, was the key to eight minutes that may boost belief in an entire program.

"This is one of those victories people are going to remember forever," SDSU associate athletic director Rob Peterson said.

If only because comparisons for the sake of argument are ingrained in sports, there was a brief post-game discussion on the team bus about the Jackrabbits' biggest victories in two-plus seasons at the NCAA Division I-AA level. There were four on the list: the inaugural I-AA win at Southern, beating North Dakota State in the inaugural Dakota Marker game and rallying past No. 16 McNeese State three weeks ago. But in short order, Saturday's victory clearly stood alone.

Not only is Cal Poly the two-time defending Great West Football Conference champion, it had boasted the nation's top passing defense and was entertaining a sun-soaked homecoming crowd of 9,042 - third largest in school history.

SDSU erased a 28-6 deficit in the final eight minutes and didn't wait even that long to spread word of its first victory against a top-5 team since 1999.

Jacks assistant head coach Luke Meadows made a call to an alumnus in Wisconsin and then sent a slew of text messages to recruits; many of which were returned in short order.

Standing with Cal Poly's almost complete $20-million stadium renovation project at his back, Peterson chatted up SDSU boosters, including Jerry Lohr, a 1958 graduate who owns J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines. Lohr told Peterson it had been the best game he'd ever seen.

Does that mean extra money is coming SDSU's way? Not necessarily, but it won't hurt the fundraising cause.  .  .  .  (read more)

For three quarters, Cal Poly’s defensive unit was dominant as ever.

The Mustangs had kept South Dakota State out of the end zone, allowed just seven first downs and limited the Jackrabbits to 169 yards of total offense.

But in the fourth quarter, Cal Poly’s vaunted pass defense fell to pieces as South Dakota State scored 23 unanswered points to stun the fourth-ranked Mustangs 29-28 on Saturday, putting their Great West Football Conference title and postseason hopes in jeopardy.  .  .  .  (read more)

                    bmilne@thetribunenews.com

Fifteen minutes and 22 points earlier, South Dakota State’s players were smacking their helmets against the team bench and burying their faces in their palms.

In the end, Cal Poly’s players were the ones looking on helplessly as the Jackrabbits rushed the field, dancing and even cartwheeling with joy following an improbable fourth-quarter comeback.

Quarterback Andy Kardoes was at the heart of that celebration Saturday after picking apart Cal Poly’s touted defense with three fourth-quarter touchdown passes and the game-winning two-point conversion run in a 29-28 Great West Football Conference victory at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.   .  .  .  .  (read more)

                      • Re: Cal-Poly

I have a few more observations from the game. After we scored the first touchdown, Cal Poly took the field at their 20 and had to call a time out because they could not get the play off in time. I just laughed at the time thinking, you have been on the sidelines for nearly 5 minutes watching your opponent score and you don't have a play called, so you call a time out? They ran the ball for no gain on 1st and 10. The next play they ran the clock down again and had to call time out again because they could not get the play off. The guy in front of me was beside himself. At that moment I knew we had a chance, Cal Poly was really playing not to lose and lose they did.

The other observation that I found humorous was their punting. Just prior to the first TD, Cal Poly punted and it went about 20 yards on the fly and rolled 14 yards for a 34 yard punt. The punt was so poor that Horn had no chance of catching it on the fly. The next punt he shanked so bad that it hit a cheerleader standing near the grandstands. The guy in front of me was really pissed about that kick. The last punt was his worst punt, he shanked it so bad that it landed three rows up into the stands behind the Jacks bench. I think it netted 17 yards. We ended up with the ball at mid field for the last TD drive.

The other observation that I thought was odd was during the kickoffs. Normally State fans ring cow bells, and some people may think that is odd but I kind of like it. At Cal Poly most of the people bring out there key rings and shake their keys during the kickoff. I thought that was very weak. They have to come up with something better than that.

MJA - Kudo's on the pick! After 14-6 I figured there was no way we could win. Boy was I wrong and don't know if I'll ever be able to assume that again, at least this year.

This season could be leading to a monumental game at NDSU. Just might have to forgo deer season and buy the tickets now before it sells out!

OK I have one more.  After the last TD, the Jacks were going to kick the extra point to tie the game and Cal Poly called there last time out.  I have no idea why they would use there last time out, but they did.  After the time out the Jacks decided to go for the 2-point conversion.  The Cal Poly cheerleaders were yelling "Block that kick!!", repeating over and over.  I yelled to them, "They are going for two, they are not kicking the ball".  Kardoes ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion and victory, while the Cal Poly cheerleaders were still yelling "Block that kick".   ;D ;D ;D
