  • Micah Johnson gets mention on ESPN

I did not see this already on the board, thought is was pretty neat for Micah to get a mention. He is a very nice person, he played co-ed softball a few summers ago with me, he could cover the whole outfield and beat out a grounder to ss. Thats the first i got to see of his super speed!

Late-round picks catch on at WRBy Len Pasquarelli

Houston Texans star Andre Johnson, the leading receiver in the NFL in 2006 with 103 catches, is a former first-round draft choice and a two-time Pro Bowl performer and generally is regarded around the league as one of its emerging young stars.

The runner-up to Johnson last season with 98 catches, Mike Furrey of Detroit, was an undrafted free agent in 2000. He played in the short-lived XFL and the Arena Football League before making an NFL roster, was a safety for the St. Louis Rams before moving to wide receiver full time and had more tackles (59) than catches (21) entering the 2006 campaign.

Yet Furrey, a self-described "slow, possession-type white guy" of modest athletic capabilities, had only five fewer receptions than Johnson, registered the same average yards per catch and scored one more touchdown than his more-talented counterpart.

Calvin Johnson caught 76 passes for 1,202 yards and 15 TDs last season.Given their similar accomplishments, Furrey and Johnson represent the difficult decision franchises face in the opening round of the draft every spring. And that conundrum -- whether to invest a first-round choice on a wide receiver or trust that a serviceable pass catcher will be available in a later round, as they typically are in every lottery -- is probably even more profound this year because of the presence of Calvin Johnson.

The Georgia Tech star, who did nothing to diminish his brilliant reputation when he auditioned for NFL coaches and scouts last week on campus, is the consensus No. 1 prospect in the draft pool.

"Far and away the best player, the safest pick, a guy you can take and probably have no [qualms] about him on or off the field," said the college scouting director for a team with a choice in the top 10 on April 28.

Yet that doesn't mean Johnson will be the first name called by commissioner Roger Goodell when he steps to the podium to commence the proceedings.

There are, of course, individual team needs that will dictate which players are picked early. And there is, in the case of the wide receiver position, a history that suggests that pass-catchers don't necessarily merit top-10 consideration.

Who's to say, for instance, that Micah Johnson of Division I-AA South Dakota State, a wide receiver with impressive college statistics and projected as a possible midround pick, won't have a more immediate impact in the NFL than Calvin Johnson? Or that Lance Johnson from Catawba, a Division II school, won't be a star at the NFL level. After all, it has happened before at wide receiver. (for more go to link Below)

That's very cool!! It will be fun to see where Micah and other Jackrabbit football players end up. I have a feeling we are going to be seeing MUCH more of this in our move to FCS...not D1-AA, come on Len, you work for ESPN, you're the last person that should get this wrong!!

Dusty Hovorka are you kidding me??? He is horrible. He has no chance at all to get drafted. Just hope he gets to play at the Storm.

Kickers unless they are a big name and punters especially don't usually get drafted. They are usaully among the first free agents that are picked up after the draft.

Neither will be considered for the draft. Especially not a kid from an NAIA division whatever in SD.

The Havorka kid was at the SDSU Pro Day today.... and he was pathetic! He was clocked between 4.8-4.9 in the 40 yard dash. He had a 24" verticle and a sad 8'6" broad jump.

Just for a small comparison between an FCS and NAIA specialist-type player.

Micah Johnson ran somewhere in the mid 4.4's. A 36" vert and a 10'8" broad jump.
Anothony Watson was clocked in the low 4.5's. He had a 32.5" verticle and a 10'7" broad jump.

I noticed Stefan Logan and one other USD player coming in to the HPER today. How did Watson compare

Re: Micah Johnson gets mention on ESPN

Stephan Logan RB/KR Logan (5-6½, 177), who went to Jackson High School in Miami, worked out at Miami's Pro Day in Coral Gables. Last season, he finished sixth in the Harlon Hill Trophy voting (the Heisman Trophy for NCAA Division II) after rushing for 1,707 yards on 7.2 yards per carry. He ran his 40s in 4.50 and 4.56 seconds. He ran the short shuttle in 4.32 and the three-cone drill in 6.84. He also had a 38½-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-1 broad jump and 11 bench presses.

If Watsons speed numbers are comparable, then that unfortunate for Stephan. Watson is about 4" taller and 40 pounds heavier.

No suprise. Most NAIA football teams would probably lose to some of the top Texas High School football programs. I think somebody should set up a game.

It that is what Watson ran, he might have significantly raised his status. I heard that his lack of pure speed might hurt his chances in the NFL.

Johnson's stats are pretty good, didn' his dad play in the NFL?

Watson's numbers are also comparable or better than NDSU's Steffe's.
I would guess that all three players, johnson, watson, & Bainbridge have a good shot of getting signed after the draft. It would be even sweeter if one gets drafted

Johnsons dad, Cornelius, attended college at Virginia Union. He played in Super Bowl 3 for the Baltimore Colts (who lost to Namith and the 'gaurentee'). However, Cornelius got his payback two or three years later when the Colts won a Super Bowl of their own. I've seen the ring! He had a 7 year career in the NFL.

As for Watson, he will have another opportunity to improve that 40 today. He and Johnson are traveling east to Southwest Minnesota State's pro day. We'll see if they can improve on those numbers they put up yesterday!

I don't think Logan has any shot at the NFL, too small. Havorka doesn't even deserve comment.

Great numbers for Micah and Anthony, questions will exist about the intangibles when it comes to Watson.

I think Micah has the best shot based on his position.

I have absolutely no credibility when discussing these issue. Best of luck to all 3.

The Argus article said Logan ran a 4.35 40. That's fast.
