  • Re: 2007 Recruits

Looks like we have a few more verbals than what has been made public.  From Terry V's Blog:

    Recruiting update
Posted in SDSU | January 24th, 2007 No Comments »

Although it took a moment for him to recall what city he was in (Denver or Dallas?), Jacks football coach John Stiegelmeier said Wednesday that the program has 14 verbal commitments with 2-3 more possible by the end of the week. Four prospects are scheduled to make campus visits this weekend, after which the total should hit the target goal of 18 or 19.

KMS’s Kavanagh to play football for SDSU

        Tribune Sports West Central Tribune
        Published Thursday, January 25, 2007

Sam Kavanagh, a two-time All-Area football player for Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, has verbally committed to South Dakota State University.

Kavanagh, a 6-2, 255-pound tight end from Murdock, caught 35 passes for 453 yards and seven touchdowns last season for the Fighting Saints. Also a powerful blocker, Kavanagh was selected the Pheasant Conference Most Valuable Lineman. He also had 59 tackles as a defensive end. . . . (read more)

Does anybody know about Matt Dolan and Alan Schmaltz from RCC?  Have they verballed anywhere, are we going after them?

Just a note - Erich Feller is 6'2" and 197 lbs, not 172 lbs.

Casey Elshere from Philip has verballed to the Jacks. 6' 3" 220 OL/DL that needs to hit the weights hard, but has the frame and athleticism to be tough in a couple years. Also sounds like one of the kids from Arizona verballed this weekend as well.

Getting down to crunch time for the new recruits. The ones who are undecided must make up there mind soon or risk taking an offer that may not be there first choice. I remember the last few weeks of the recruiting time, was an interesting, also a very stressful time for the whole family. Looking forward to a week from Wednesday and see the new Jackrabbit class.

Found this article on Woody Orne, sounds like he's a heck of a basketball player too. Hopefully he develops football skills like Wagner and can step in once he graduates!

Scoring 30 points in one thing, but grabbing 30 rebounds is a whole other story. Three-star 2007 prospect Woody Orne did actually grab 30 rebounds while also scoring 36 points in a game this year. As expected, colleges are starting to check in on the 6-foot-6, 230-pound power forward from Fairfield (Iowa) High School.
Averaging 22 points and 15.5 rebounds per game this season, Orne had his 36 points and 30 rebounds in a 79-74 double overtime loss to Mid-Prairie High School. Esteemed Mid-Prairie head coach and the chair of the USA Basketball Men's Junior Development Committee Don Showalter commented on Orne.

"Orne is an excellent offensive rebounder with the ability to get the rebound out of his area and score," said Showalter. "His midrange game is very good, and he can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket and finish. He is the type of player that compliments the players around him."

Orne, who has already unofficially visited Iowa, Illinois State, Drake and Northern Iowa, said he is wide open at this point in his recruitment, but he did list some of the schools he is hearing from.

"Drake has been to a couple games," said Orne. "I'm also hearing from Illinois State, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette and Utah."

Orne is also a talented tight end and defensive end on the football field, but basketball is the sport of his future.

"Iowa and Iowa State are recruiting me in football," he said. "But I would much rather play basketball."

Orne will run with the Iowa Barnstormers on the AAU circuit.

Add one more to the list.  From the Star Tribune's website: http://www.startribune.com/526/story/943355.html

"Zach Buchner, a 6-5, 280-pound lineman for Coon Rapids, has verbally committed to South Dakota State."

Can't be 100% sure because the article above is not dated, however it appears to be fairly old based on this story from 1/17/07 (Sub site).

Fairfield tight end Woody Orne has seen a lot of schools recruit him during his high school years. Many felt he was going to be a college basketball player early on but this senior decided in the summer that he was better suited for football.  .  .  .  (read more)

So I wouldn't read too much into the other article, kids change their minds (or reality changes it for them).  At one point in my life, I wanted to be an Astronaut.  My love of space was tempered by my deficiencies in higher mathematical skills, that and the fact that I was no longer 7 years old.  ;D
