    Re: Playing USD again (football)

I understand that people have many definitions of a rivalry, but you've got to be kidding me!!! The only reason that USD is considered a "rival" is for bragging rights. It's a game that draws casual ignorant fans so they can puff their chest and talk about who's going to win (see Craig and Mike, Stu-pid, etc.). The definition of a rivaly, in my opinion, MUST include competitive nature between the two teams. Someone please show our record versus USD over the last 10-15 games in football. It's not even close. I don't consider them a rivalry game, but an "interest" game. It's a game that many people care about, but it's not a competitive rivalry. If UNC beat Duke every year in b-ball, it wouldn't be nationally televised just because they're geographically close and hatred exists.

USD is not a rival in football, unless they can figure out how to beat us more than 2 out of 10 times. Their success is largely because they no longer have 3 guaranteed losses on their schedule anymore (Northern Colorado, NDSU, SDSU).

If you can't tell, I'm tired of the loose definition of rivalry. If it's all about money, we'll play them someday but I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Not a smack thread, I know, but I equate it to what Bobby Huggins said about his K-state program and the Kansas "rivalry". Its not a rivalry until K-state starts beating Kansas. Thats just the facts.

Don't forget that USD still leads the all time series so don't just focus on the last few years. The USD program is powerfull and will be plenty the challenge for SDSU. I imagine they will get their fair share of wins against the Jackrabbids.

USD has definitely improved a lot under Meierkort. I don't think anyone but the most rabid partisan could argue otherwise, and USD's playoff run last year is the best evidence of that.

But let's wait until USD has played some FCS games before we declare the programs equals. You played a good transitional team, UCA, on the road last year and, except for some turnovers held your own before dropping a 24-0 game. And I know the prevailing wisdom down there is that the top of D2 = the middle of FCS. That wouldn't be my impression, having seen both levels now. But USD has to find that out for themselves. You've got McNeese this year. See how that goes and then start playing the Cal Poly's and UC Davis's after that and see if you think FCS and top D2 programs are equivalent. I know UND beat UNI last year, but I'm guessing UNI overlooked them a bit. When you play on those programs on their terms and in games that count, you get to see what FCS is actually about.

I don't wish USD ill. The student athletes deserve a shot at success, particularly those athletes who stay with you during transition. Why would anyone want those young people, many of them from South Dakota, to have a bad experience?

Very well stated. USD struggled mightily pre-Meirkort. The success the have found during the most recent years is a great credit to USD's athletic dept. However, the level of competition in the NCC is not what it was just 3 short years ago, either. USD fans would do well not to forget that. Finally, SDSU is one hell of a lot more talented and a much better team than we were during the last 17 game with USD where we hold a 14-3 advantage. I look forward to kicking the yotes in the face again as soon as they are up to the level of our rear end. You aren't there yet.

Has USD improved under the new coaching staff? I would have to agree they have. Don't forget though this resurgance came after three programs who dominated USD in recent years (NDSU,SDSU,UNC) departed the conference. If you want to have meaningful dialgoue on this board and have board members take you seriously don't come on this board with a moniker like the one you created.

That sounds like a pretty good definition of a rivalry. I think you have it backwards. Your definition of a rivalry game sounds like an interest game. Just because two teams are competitive against each other does not mean the game is a rivalry game, and just because a series is lopsided does not mean it is not a rivalry.

If UNC beat Duke every year in b-ball, it wouldn't be nationally televised just because they're geographically close and hatred exists.
If the UNC-Duke game were to become lopsided, it may well lose national attention - but that wouldn't mean it wasn't a rivalry. As you say yourself, there is a difference between an "interest game" and a rivalry. The UNC-Duke game is popular nationally not because of the rivalry, but because it is, in addition to being a rivalry, is an interest game.
