  • Re: 2008 recruiting class

Zach Carter was being recruited hard by Nebraska as a D-Lineman in the mid-90's and had an offer on the table. Coach Stig was his recruit from SDSU. Zach gave his verbal to Nebraska. At the last minute, Nebraska called him to tell him they wanted him to play O-line and wouldn't give him a scholarship if he wanted to play D-line. He told them to go to hell and called up Coach Stig. That's just what happens sometimes. Here's hoping he ends up at SDSU. Sounds like he's a huge talent and I would love to see him in the Jacks uniform. Don't count out Coach Stig. He's a talented recruiter.

When is signing day? First week of Feb or something like that. Also, do the coaches have a time now when they cannot contact recruits? Isn't there a 30 day period when they can't make contacts prior to signing time?

I believe -- at least for BCS teams -- the dead period started sometime Sunday and runs through the bowl season.

I echo the comments about hoping he is surrounded by people that have his best interests at heart and not just what will happen on the field.

I'm always interested in knowing more about their background and what they want to do in life. SDSU may be the perfect place for what they want to do in life after football. It may be Nebraska, who knows. He may know people here or there. Now that we are playing Nebraska in 2010, he could come here but still get to play at Nebraska.

There's a ton that goes into this decision and it is really tough. It's hard for a kid to sift through the BS to see where he will fit in best.

Best of luck to him. Oh, and of course, we would love to have him on our team!!!

It would be great to have him, but if the truth be told, most schools go into the recruiting with the best for the athlete in mind. However, I think the BS comes in with promises of playing time and not knowing if you will be the 2nd or 3rd recruit for the same position. The schools have to hedge their recruiting to make sure they get enough depth at certain positions. If they lose one recruit they have something to fall back on. If they don't, then the 3rd recruit gets lost in the dust. That is one of the issues with the larger schools.

I wish the best for Riley. It is tough for these athletes to make decisions that will affect the rest of their lives...

Is Marcel Jones playing with the Jacks next year? How many schools did he actually attend? Reilly hasn't attended any yet.

Nothing against Jones - just pointing out that these things do happen, and not every school is right for certain players. There are many people, especially around age 17-22 that change their mind...They can turn out to be wonderful people.

Feb. 6th is the first day football recruits can sign.

Currently football is in a dead period but that just means you can't have in-person contact with recruits on or off campus. Coaches can continue to call recruits though during this time.

I just read on the Iowa board that Riley changed his mind again and recommited to the Hawks.

Kirk Ferentz is a good guy (talked to him a couple times in Bruegger's Bagels in Iowa City). I'd send my kid to play for Stig... and I'd send my kid to play for Ferentz.

Riley tore a tendent or something in his wrist.... Nebraska said come here now have are doctor fix it now and Riley said no and they pulled his scholarship.... He then went to a specialist in Sioux Falls and Iowa's doctor they both said to have surgery and he is expected to be ready by this summer..... Thats the way I understood it that Nebraska pulled there scholarship and that is why he is going to Iowa instead of Nebraska.....

UNI seems to be dominating in the verbal recruiting game for Iowa High School Players. I guess their solid winning history and facilities and proximity to Iowa Recruits is playing well again. In terms of nearby states without a DIAA (Minnesota) I would expect we will see several players coming from there. Main competition will always be NDSU,UNI and UND, however USD has recently placed more emphasis on recruiting Minnesota.

We got 5 commits according to Stig and have 5 more offers on the table as of right now.

I only know of Kool and O'Brien. So it seems we must have had some commits between the last confirmed (Kool) and today (1/2/07).
