Historical note. The Confederate battle flag (not shown because it is considered not pc) is often called the stars and bars. This is not correct. The flag that is the "stars and bars" flag is the First Confederate flag. this flag was designed by Nicholas Marschall based on his native Austrian flag. the first version was 7 stars and final version was 13 stars for the 13 confederate states. it was used from 03/1861 until 05/1863 when it was replaced by "The Stainless Banner". During battles the stars and bars and the stars and stripes were often confused by fighters from both sides. thus the change to the "Stainless banner", white with the battle flag in the upper left corner. the stainless banner was replaced by the "Blood-Stained Banner", same flag as stainless banner only with a vertical red stripe on the tail of the flag, because it was often confused as the white flag of surrender.The Stars and Bars.
