For real... If a QB on the roster steps up or we get a transfer in... This team is stacked and experienced. The QB wouldn't even have to be great, just consistent (think Zach Lujan).

Also, we're going to need a new DC... At a minimum a new defensive philosophy. Knowing that neither of those will happen, I'm already predicting a 7 or 8 win regular season with a second round exit in Fargo. Of course that's assuming we don't land Jalen Hurts when he transfers from Bama.

      Regarding the defense:

      - I've heard in the past that the Defensive Coordinator position is somewhat limited in what they can do because they have to stick to Stig's defensive philosophy. Which seems to be to keep it simple and have each player execute their job and then there is little need for multiple formations and blitzes. (someone correct me if I'm wrong, or better yet, maybe there is a former player who has a better read on this)

      - I think the defense received a lot of flack after the NDSU playoff game but it needs to be considered that a) we just played a run heavy playoff team in Georgia, and then b) went up against a run heavy Bison team in Fargo that very few teams (if any) have been successful at stopping. So I can see why we wore out an got ran over in that game. I understand the blame has to fall somewhere but it probably should go back to losing the UNI game and not getting better bracket and home field, and to be honest, I feel if anything we lost the NDSU game because our passing game was stymied.

      - It is frustrating that year after year it seems that we struggle to get pressure on opposing QBs. I'm not sure if that is scheme or recruiting, but we've struggled to find those burners on the edge that can wrap around and cause a strip sack. I'd love to see more situational defensive subbing on passing downs with nickel corners, sliding bigger DEs inside DT, and bringing in pass rush specialists like Tolu.

I think Bulldog's 2 Deep is pretty accurate. It would be a huge bonus if DePriest could come in and contribute right away at NG. Hildahl showed against KSU and NDSU that he just can't handle more than 10 snaps a game. Xavier Ward is a totally different player when Krolikowski is next to him. Any of the MDs on the board with an idea of how long KK might be out with his torn ACL? The defensive ends have to be better. Its shocking that Smenda was brought in to be a pass rusher and he didn't register a sack this season. He does play the run well. Elijah Wilson if he can stay healthy is a good option but not an edge bender. I personally don't understand why Tolu isn't getting more reps in passing situations.

Linebacker depth is a concern but I don't think Rozeboom, Backhaus, and Wilson make a very good starting trio. Levi Brown just hasn't been able to get on field. Jaden Snyder and Saiveon Williamson did have good showings this fall but there will still be an adjustment period.

Slightly nervous about the CBs. Zy and Marshon have just been plagued by inconsistency. Its a little discouraging that Malik Lofton couldn't find a way to beat them out this season. Don Gardner is a tough guy and special teams dynamo but I think he is limited as a CB. He may be a great guy to use on a physical possession receivers. Coaches are very high in Ti'Jaih Davis but he will take some lumps as a young player. Gales is still learning after playing very limited defense in HS but the physical talent is there. Diamond Evans could see time early.

The safety position is a question mark. Manchigiah was great against the pass but left a lot to be desired on tackling. Supposedly Michael Griffin was the most complete safety on the roster. Hopefully that is true. Zo is a quality backup and I have liked what I have seen from Jarek Berg in limited action. DeMartra has all the physical talent but needs the game to slow down. This is a big spring for him. Its a shame that Nic Garlisch tore his ACL early in fall camp. Baily Darnell could maybe play.

Again, the position I am most nervous about is RT. Aron Johnson and John Gruetzmacher did not look good in their couple game stint filling in for Tyler Weir. I wouldn't be shocked if Garret Greenfield flipped to the right side for a season before taking over at left tackle after Evan Greeneway graduates. We'll be really good on the interior with Genant, Miller, and Lickiss and with Boen and McCormick as top flight backups and I think that Domandle is a capable backup at center. Tackle is thin if Johnson and Gruetzmacher don't improve. Wouldn't be shocked if Vibert and Westendorf played early. Donald seems like more of a project to me.

We return a loaded group of wide receivers. Jacob Brown played with a hand injury for the last half of the season. If he's fully healthy it gives the new QB another weapon. It was great to see Hill make some plays in the playoffs. That hopefully gives him some confidence heading into spring. Johnson and Anderson are a great duo. The Jankes will get some reps because of their size/speed combo. I think a year in the weight room will do wonders for Bauer and Daily Jr.

All the tight ends should be back. I'm interested to see if Cavanaugh is able to carve out a role or if he has been permanently jumped by Kunz. Kal is a great blocker and reliable receiver. This is a position of great depth and only got better with the signings of Kraft and Bloomenrader.

Running back is fine. I think the order is Strong, Wilson, and Daniel serving as the short yardage back like he did his sophomore season. I hope Blair Mullholland sticks around but wouldn't blame him for leaving. 8-10 years ago he would have gotten lots of reps for the Jacks. He's a good kid but the Jacks are just loaded at RB. Still need to add a 2019 back.

Finally, QB. What I heard this fall is that J'Bore was still working to absorb the play book. Obviously, it was much much more complicated than his HS playbook and he has said as much in interviews with Zim. He's a smart kid and a good student so I wouldn't count him out. I have not heard that he is working out with the WR group. There will be a transfer QB coming in that will compete with J'Bore and Nelson. Unfortunately, the game just hasn't slowed down for Kanin and he is who he is at this point. A good runner with a decent arm that probably tucks and runs too quickly before going through his progressions. I think Matt Connors could be in the mix. This is a HUGE spring for J'Bore and Connors. I think Justin Roberts and the two freshmen they are bringing in are practice arms.

One thing I am interesting to see is if the coaches "cut" under-performers again? I hope the timing is better than last year but I think this may be an option worth exploring in order to free up some scholarship $. We'll know more once classes start and we see who is back on campus.

We'll be hearing we could have some grade issues w/ a couple guys. That could create some depth issues.
My concerns: obviously QB, depth at RB, depth at LB (any talk of Rozeboom looking at draft or grad transfer?) (rumors of Snyder transferring cuz he's not being put on scholarship) We'll probably see a couple corners move on? Plenty of depth there. Davis will be a stud! I think we have an injured WR that probably won't return to football, but depth there is good. Safety depth is very concerning. Manchigiah should move to free safety and Griffin to SS. Griffin will replace Snyder as a guy who can come down hill. Manchigiah and Slade were more coverage guys, but were exposed a bit vs physical running teams. Could any TE's be moved to OT? OT is very concerning as well for me. Punter is also very concerning for me. Brady was as good as they get!

Of course we have guys that will be out of the picture due to grades....SMH. Which is incredibly frustrating to me. If they aren't good students in high school, there is very little chance they are going to be good students in college. We simply should not recruit these type of guys.

Depth at RB a concern??? Daniel, Pierre Strong Jr, CJ Wilson, Blair Mullholland? I think there is a true FR on the roster as well. Unless 2 or 3 of these guys leave, I think we will be fine here.

              - Has anyone heard anything on CB Bryce Banks who transferred in from North Carolina State and had a handful of D1 offers out of high school?

              - I thought DT Caleb Sanders flashed when he played this year and would expect a jump in 2019. DT group should be talented for the next few years.

              - If it ends up being Kanin at QB then I would assume Eidness will reshape the offense to fit his strengths. He reminds me of Andy Kardoes in the limited action we've seen.

              - RB Strong had a great finish, but I thought that CJ Wilson also looked great and like a different type of athlete that I've ever seen at SDSU.

              - Any chance LB Kyle Tuttle makes an impact at LB if we're thin or is his career basically over after knee injury? Otherwise we are probably a bit thin there and why we offered the LB grad transfer from Colgate. Good news is that LB shouldn't be too hard to find in the JUCO ranks.

Do the students return to class this week? It would be nice if we get transfers or grad transfers to come in at the semester, so they can have the winter strength/conditioning and also spring football to get acclimated to our system. I'm not hearing of anything other than a grad transfer linebacker offer.

I’m not sure that’s a bad thing tbh. If we start bringing in transfers every year while we cut guys we recruited, it can be a bad look to future recruits IMO. There are circumstances where a transfer is good, Snyder being the most recent success there. In general though I’m not the biggest fan of pining to go the ISUr/SHSU route.

Now that class has been back in session for awhile, has there been any word of current players that did not return after the break ?

Was anyone aware of Mason Leighton transferring to SDSU from DSU?? I hadn’t seen anything about him. I remember him taking the scholarship at hometown DSU over a walk on at USD a couple years back.

The spring 2019 roster is up on gojacks. https://gojacks.com/roster.aspx?rost...&path=football

Nothing major in terms of subtractions. However, neither Kurt Walding or Mason Leighton are listed so I'm not sure how up to date it is or if they just advanced the guys who were already on the roster. One other interesting observation is that Marquise Lewis is still listed. I thought he was injury retired so not sure on him. The Jacks carried Chase Kern and Alex Romenesko on the roster all of last season so I wonder if they will do the same with Marquise.

In terms of the departures it is all walk-ons from last years class and one upper classman.

Those that I have spotted: Zach Dorgan (DT) (pharmacy school, I think), Sam Wilmott (DT), Max Howard (OL), Zach Collins (OL), Logan Busch (OL). Again, all are walkons.

If this is true, its pretty good retention. Hopefully we don't lose any major players or young talent between spring ball and summer camp.

If my count is correct, the updated roster has 87 players. The commit list is right at 30, with the potential for a few more. That puts the roster at north of 115 players for next season. I realize that many of the recruits receive partial scholarships or no money at all in some cases, but doesn't that roster size mean that some cutting will need to happen ?
