Edit, and if you are correct, and it was a 3 year deal, this could be end of a second year perhaps making it feasible to buy him out. But, typically a coach after a great year like last year, leverages that into an extension and a raise. Bohl was a master at that.
Guess I missed this posts earlier about this, but I asked, for the same reason. If we are in a contract with a year or two left. I don't think SDSU can afford to pay stig to leave and afford to pay a new coach even more to come here at the same time.

Frankly I think Stig has earned the right to step down when he wants. I would guess he might not want to after a couple more years anyway. Maybe he would stay longer then people think, but in coaching and maybe in Nagys case, it might be time to leave before then want you to leave. He wouldn't want to stay if the program started to suffer. I think if he saw the wheels are falling off and the program is going in the wrong direction, I think he would step aside before he was asked too.

I think BB Coach Johnston has the right philosophy on this: get players out on the court and see if they can play. (If they can't, let them go and get new recruits. You cycle through more players that way and are mathematically more likely to hit it big more often. Save the redshirts for good transfers, grads, etc. who become available.)
To me a redshirt year provides a student-athlete there best chance for athletic and academic success.
      1. Chance to mature and get on a proper plan with the strength coach to get bigger, faster and stronger.
      2. Learn the playbook without the added game day pressure.
      3. Additional year with the team and improve there own skillset
      4. Adjust to college life
      5. Play a 5th year. 5th year seniors are more seasoned, the game will have slowed down for them, will be better leaders, play with more urgency and be trusted more by coaches and teammates than most 18 year old kids.
      6. Have 5 years in worth of classes to help the student-athletes attain there degree and possibility to take graduate level courses.
      7. Ultimately give the student-athlete the best chance to reach there potential on the field, in the classroom and after graduation.

You were pretty nice with your response. I never cease to be amazed stuff folks post. When you pull a shirt, you are sacrificing their best year of football for their worst. Pulling a shirt should be the exception if you want to be successful.

I agree. In football especially a red shirt year is important for the kid to mature and gain strength. IMO, very very few recruits are truly ready to play at this level out of high school.

As far as women's basketball, the strength gap between an 18 year old woman and a 21 year old woman just isn't as big as it is for men.

Look at Mike Daum for an example of what a red shirt year can do.

How many true freshmen are playing this year? How many 5th year seniors could we have if we had red shirted the entire 2013 freshman class?

How many true freshman are playing? Or how many had their redshirts pulled? Pretty big difference in those numbers this year

That is true, but as long as 5th yr grad transfers are allowed I understand why coaches are red-shirting fewer, especially in football where you can find plays for them on the field at some point in the game (special teams, certain packages, etc.)

                    Redshirts Pulled:
Seven Wilson- Contributes on special teams and backup OLB. Played in all 6 games. Needed due to 3 season/career ending injuries at the position. 10 tackles so far this season.
Noah Urbanek- Contributes on special teams and backup OLB. Played in 5 of 6 games (missed due to injury). Needed due to 3 season/career ending injuries at the position. 9 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss so far this season.
Xavier Ward- In the rotation at defensive tackle. Played in all 6 games. Needed due to Whitsell retirement. 3 tackles this season
Daniel Callender- Pass rush specialist at DE. Played in 3 of 6 games. Hasn't played as much as most of us expected. Has made an impact at times. 3 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, .5 sack

Eddie Miller- Offensive guard. Played in 5 of 6 games. Due to depth issues, is 1 play away. Will compete next year to start.
Eagan Lickiss- Offensive tackle. Played in all 6 games. Due to depth and suspension/quitting of Matt Clark, is 1 play away.
Jack Domandle- Backup center. Played in 3 games. 1 play away and will compete with Austin Boen to take over this position next year after Ohnesorge graduates.
Skyler Cavanaugh- Backup tight end and special teams. Played in all 6 games. Named MVFC Newcomer of the Week following SIU performance. 6 receptions, 73 yards, 1 TD

In terms who could have been playing this year... Cole Langer, Jesse Bobbit, Thayer Trenhaile. Remember, this class had a TON of attrition in transfers and players quitting football.

Another thing that might factor into the discussion between a player and the coaching staff when deciding on a redshirt year might be if the player wants to attend college for five years. Not everyone may be interested in an extra year of attending class, even if it might be to their advantage on the playing field.

BINGO? This makes no sense. Probably 95% of the student athletes don’t graduate in four years. They are allowed only 12 credits during the season and few take summer classes or can accomplish an internship during Football. How many players graduated in May after four years? Very few.

high school players are not ready mentally or physically to play college football and need the red shirt year. Stig pulled way to many this year for odd reasons and pulled them in the past for odd reasons. If the player is not going to be a significant contributor don’t pull it.

I think he also pulled for fear some of the more talented ones would get bored and leave the program if they didn't get them on the field sooner than later. Five years in Brookings can be a long time for some of these outstate kids. Also, gives them options if injured or other unforseen circumstance develops. Less likely to transfer imho.

Who is going to leave? Normal reductions because of grades, homesick and injury takes its toll but talent hasn’t been it. It comes down to the word COMMITMENT. Are the recruits committed to the program then five years fly by for them. Ask players that played. I don’t remember a transfer out on the fifth year either. Remember they must graduate in four to transfer in the fifth year unless they want to sit out a transfer year. I don’t see this in Brookings. HC should not promise anything about playing time right away.

In the past I would have agreed with you, but now I don't.

I think more than 5% graduate in 4 years if they want to (I'm guessing some purposely hold out on graduating because they don't want to start a grad program while playing sports.)

I do think the not letting talented recruits sit/grad transfer rule is a reason why some are playing right away.

I also think some of it is, if they can contribute they should play. The program is paying x amount of money for them, if they can help shouldn't they play?

I don't think talent or rotation is the problem, Christion has to play better and special teams has to show up and its a munch better team.

If you want to harp at talent issues, why isn't the program recruiting grad transfers and D-I FBS recruits? That is where I'd like to see them improve not red-shirt/don't redshirt argument
