I would assume that includes labor. Since the staff are already on salaried pay, it would seem the cost would be less and I have no idea what a typical day is like in the equipment dept, but there has to be some idle time for putting decals on helmets.

Perhaps paying a the design company to come up with an approved scheme adds a lot to a uniform change.

Does the school go to under armour with the idea? Or does UA suggest it to the school?

Athletic Depts at different institutions have different priorities. Right now spending money on a 2nd helmet is not a priority for SDSU. Check out the thread about USD having to increase their student fees to cover additional money for the athletic dept.

There is a lot of students that assist in the equipment dept. Not sure if they are paid or volunteers.

I think Rudy was a volunteer when he tried to spray paint the gold helmets. However, he got kicked out because he wasn't a student and couldn't furnish an ID......and then his brother stole his girl.

The equipment managers are probably another good place for UPD to start checking IDs.

I thought about volunteer labor that and whatever value you assign, it lower cost more. Plus some of Student athletes are still on work study programs. The bottom line is that changing decals is inexpensive and I was indifferent to making changes, but I never said anything about how expensive it was. Just for the record.

I'm sure UA has a designer that works with the school every year. Designer probably covers a bunch of universities in each region. 2 new designs a year. Uses existing production to create, etc.

I really like the new uniforms. More importantly, the players appear to love them.

I'm sure if we raised student fees and sent 80% of the increase to athletics, we could play the shell game with the funding and find money to buy new helmets as well.

Exactly! Let the kids wear what they like. If you don't think appearance matters take your teenage kid shopping for new attire, I'm doubting you will pick out the same things.

I doubt that labor has anything to do with the cost to buy the helmet. Those things are flippin expensive. When I bought mine from high school in 07, it was $160 and that was back when the Revolutions were "top of the line". I would not be surprised with all the different helmets out there and the amount of anti concussion technology that goes into them that they are at least $300 per helmet. Nevermind all the extra facemasks you buy, visors, chinstraps, ect if you are going to do it right so if something breaks you don't look like a hodge podge Pop Warner team. $40k sounds about right just to purchase the second helmets. They are stupid expensive.

Edit: after a quick google to find out the new style of helmet to appropriately price them, it looks like the new ones are called the Riddel Speedflex. They run about $430.00 per lid. Ouch. But like my dad always told me when we got hockey equiptment, I'm not putting a price on saftey, you pay what you gotta pay. Especially with all the concussion business going around (which I'm sure helmet companys are taking advantage of with these prices)

It sure doesn't. I was referring back to Hareofdog post of changing decals being expensive. With the volunteer labor and work study people you can change decals every game if that's what you want.

I am guessing they are not new helmets only new decals put on the old helments. Just guessing though
