  • Dakota Marker - 2014 Edition

All right, let's blow the top off this thing. I will be in attendance in Fargo.

Line play will be crucial this weekend, especially our offensive line play. NDSU has the most formidable defensive front in FCS. If the Jacks hope to have a shot, we have to neutralize their defensive front, which will be the toughest task all year. Keep in mind, UNI also has a very formidable front seven. NDSU plays at an even higher level than that.

Hopefully Schneider can go as we will need our full compliment of offensive weapons.

On defense, we have to stop the run a lot better than we did against YSU. That was pitiful. DL and LBs washed away and missed tackles by safeties on the backside cutbacks all day long. We have to be much more fundamentally sound. Time to scrap the zone read bull **** and focus the DL on getting up field and causing some havoc with LBs fitting gaps properly. If I watch Bobbitt make the wrong fit one more time I may scream. Dallas Brown also made some critical errors filling gaps last Saturday.

Our lack of a pass rusher is killing us right now. We can't get there and may have to blitz more and take the risk of getting beat. We made a freshman look like an All-American in his first true road game.

    Thoughts?

We are going to need the best effort of the season from everybody on the field, and probably going to need a few bounces to go our way. Can't get in a hole early, or the result is going to be similar/worse than the last 3 years.

Looking forward to a great week! Any of you planning on tailgating? I know Fargo has some crazy stupid rules, but if you get in line early, you can snag spots.

There potentially is a pass rusher on the roster in Freshman Chase Kern. 2 sacks in limited playing time, through 4 games (really 3 games didn't see him in more then one series this weekend for whatever reason).

I hinted at this before. Have to think "outside the box" and be a little unconventional. I don't mean some crazy scheme on offense and defense, I mean implementing some of the less conventional plays and defensive looks. It seems the idea of lining up and being more physical isn't going to work with this years team against a team like NDSU. If the Jacks line up and run inside the tackles from a pistol formation it over before the end of the first quarter.

I don't see the NDSU defense yielding much at home. Have to hold their offense down as much as possible. Possess the ball, play great special teams, create turnovers and see what happens.

I really see no way we win this game. They have the best offensive and defensive lines in the valley, and we have possibly the worst(its close with usd). Our d-line has a chance if they change up their scheme and simply try and plug things up and get some penetration, but then our linebackers have to be able to tackle which is also a problem. On offense lujan better have his head on a swivel because they will bring the heat all day. I really think that we will be able to move the ball simply because we have some really good skill players, but drives will likely get stalled due to sacks and penalties with their relentless pass rush. I really wouldn't be surprised to see the bison have 8+ sacks on the day.

One thing that has bothered me is the lack of stretch zone plays we've run this year with ZZ. You look at tape last year and it seems we ran a lot of outside zone with him. Maybe that is a product of the left side of our line from last year being dominant compared to their performance this year. I don't know. However, I'd love to see us get ZZ to the edge a bit more. We run him on that swing pass and we only threw it to him a couple times. Once he was uncovered, the other time, covered, but there were many times where we could have gotten him the ball in space and let him do his thing. Just food for thought.

Our offensive line may give up a bunch of sacks this week if we don't have a different game plan to handle NDSU's front four.

I'd also like to see ZZ go out with a decent performance against the Bison, all things considered. They may be the only team against which he has not rushed for 100 yards at least once in his career in conference. Too lazy to look that up right now.

He probably has many Zenners to go before he breaks even 100 yards total against NDSU in all the games he has had against them is my guess. They seem to dominate the line even when we had good lines and we abandon the run to pass usually early against them because the run gets shut down so easy. Hope the team is ready for this one. If they can win at UNI why not at NDSU. the way the season has gone not sure i would be surprised either way with the score.

Maybe it is all part of the Master Plan. Aren't the Jacks undefeated in Domes this year? Maybe the game plan is to go in with NDSU being way overconfident and spring the big upset? Catch them off guard? Wasn't TV speculating the Stig was hinting the Bison game is a "long ways away"???

ZZ had 43 and 46 in the two games against them as a sophomore and 34 as a RS. Only had 7 carries that first year since he wasn't the feature back really. Last year was when we totally abandoned the run and he ended with 7 carries total or so.

According to Bisonville a Zenner is equal to 14 yards.

memory does not serve me well. I didnt think he got close to that many as he had. well hopefully he finds a way to surpass those and break off some of those classic runs he has done in his career.

So many injuries... We'll need a little luck and nearly a perfect game to pull off an upset with the lineup we currently have. The O-line play concerns me more than any of the other deficiencies. They struggled mightily last weekend (and much of the UNI game) and now will be facing even stiffer competition in a much louder building. If they don't find some way to hold their own, none of the other factors will matter and the Bison will easily cover the 16-point spread.

If the Jacks come out and play Defense like they did the second half of the last two games. I think you are looking at a pretty good game. My opinion is we have to win this game. If we don't, I think you kiss the playoffs goodbye, and that pretty much sucks. In general I think we give NDSU their toughest game every year. Our secondary will be 100% this week. I think we need Schneider in the game or yes, it could be a short day for the offense. Lujan performed very well last week IMO, no picks and showed some scramble ability, which he really needed.
