We got of there just in time. I think the momentum shifted and I dont think we would have won the fifth quarter in the form of an overtime. With all the trouble with the alleged free feed, I guess I made the right decision to drive to Brookings and watch the game at Perkins. That was not free, as you kept your seat by ordering some of their great dinners, like Roasted Turkey. I needed to eat any how so that all worked out.
Looks like the QB from SELA has some class to him. Lets hope they dont have another Wes Hardin, a great player btw. It would have been nice to see ZZ break his record, but the final score matters more. Punt returns? No comment.
Your positive outlook makes me think you had too much German beer downtown.
I think the negative reaction is related to not putting a team away that was clearly inferior, which UND currently is. Montana is still an open wound. Hell, 2003 UND still haunts my thoughts.
That's the key for me. Flashes of the MT game!
I did not expect a blowout in that building, but the way the defense played in the first and (especially) the fourth quarter concerns me. We won the turnover battle 3-0 and watched UND drop at least four wide open passes, yet they had a chance to tie it late. Be VERY thankful we left that building with a win.
My feelings,it's easy to be critical, too easy, even though a person is critical because he cares, not to just be negative or hurtful. Most on this message board are thoughtful and articulate in handling things ,handled by others ,that are contrary to the way they think it should have been handled.First things first,I really like and admire coach Stig.I hope he remains the coach at SDSU as long as he desires to coach, and he remains healthy, and I'm sure he will.He deserves no less for all the work he's devoted to the program, and the players.
I should stop right here and i probably should, because critisism becomes more damaging than constructive at some point.I hope I don't cross that line,as it's not my intention to be harmful to the program or it's coaches. My only hope is that the coaching staff become better game managers who see trends happening in realtime and make corrections during a game and not have to wait until the game is over ,look at "film" and figure out what happened.Film is a great tool, but sometimes decisions have to be made "in the heat of the battle" so to speak.
To put into context what i'm talking about, our 4th quarter, our run game suddenly became ineffective, and their passing attack couldn't be stopped.Stig said the guys in the 4th quarter were giving them three yards more cushion than earlier.Astute observation by someone, and this fotifies my point, why no correction for so long a time?
UND did a heck of a job comming back and a lot of it was soley their effort and desire as opposed to any short commings from our players. All turned out well in the end and we will be a better team from lessons learned.Maybe we needed this to take the next step in the progression of the team.Feel free to be critical of this post if you disagree with it,not too sure I should have written it myself and i value other peoples opinions rather than just relying on my own, especially when I'm unsure.
Coming into this game I was expecting a dogfight. That's exactly what it was. We kicked their ass, they got up and threw some haymakers, but it wasn't enough. Apparently 1-0each week isn't good enough for some people. They "demand" 1-0 + a blowout. We just beat a good team on the road. I'll take that.
One hand points to campus...the other to the liquor store.
We were great stopping the run and solid to spectacular all around on offense. After the sluggish start, anyhow. But you can't -- nobody reading this -- just CAN'T be OK with our pass defense yesterday. To just ignore how bad it was because we won is silly. Future opponents certainly won't. The other area that clearly needs work is the kick return game. Had the same issue last season. And the year before, special teams were, at times, close to an abject disaster. So we have a recurring theme, it seems. Some stuff to clean up, no question, though I'll take a road win in a dome anytime.
Grumbling along and embracing my role. If I didn't care, I wouldn't care. Go Jacks!
[QUOTE=jackdaniel;234535]Don't like getting to 35 and just quit scoring, hoping we have enough points to hold on.Stig doesn't have the killer instinct,no matter how many teams come back on us.Even a FG would have helped.Good job Defense saving the day![/QU OTE]
We did seem to be happy with a comfortable lead. Late game choices, dropped balls, muffed punt returns, poor punts all add up to keeping UND in the game. Fortuneately we had a great effort and came home with a win. There will be many teams leaving UND with a loss this year. Plus, I disagree with some on this board who suggest that UND is not a good team. They are and the end of year with wins and losses will decide that.
We have never faired well at UND or inside domes! Its was an important win. I for one was very uneasy about winning this game, Congrats on the win Jacks and I for one will move on to SELA.
Stig mentioned postgame a separated shoulder and a concussion...didn't say who.
Elmore went off late with what looked like a stinger or shoulder injury, but not sure the extent. That would be a big loss at a thin LB position if he is out for a bit.

If I heard correctly in the press conference, TV asked Coach Stig about injuries. Stig would not give names, but he mentioned that someone had a concussion. Could this have been Elmore? The pressers are on TV blog page.
Hey, celebrate. It was a road win against a decent and motivated opponent. Other bright spots include that the Jacks have the potential to overcome mistakes and they have the talent to be a an even better team than last year. That seemed evident.
Here is the game story from Grand Forks Herald. Very complimentry. The UND coach is honest in admiting that the turnovers were the difference, and they were. Also contained is a video on Cheerleading who does offer scholarships, something we might consider at SDSU. I also notice the cheer squad was practicing in Hyslop Area, the old bb facility, no longer used but was once the newest facilty in the NCC. It was built about 1948, and the place could be noisey especially when the Jacks came to play.
Just wanted too ad my two sense. Would it be possible to maybe just maybe throw the ball on first or second down with a play-action? I understand Zenner was running like a beast but at the same time when ya play Nebraska or NDSU there aren't going to allow that in my own opionion. You have to get your quarterback ans receivers in a rythm instead ot just passing on 3rd and 10. They play calling is way tok fonservative and it almost came back and kicked our ass. Big boy teams don't take their foot off the gas when they have a team down they continually say if you can't stop us that's not our fault. You have to open up the playbook. I don't even think they involved cam with any pass plays.

I saw Cam Jones used as a blocker which I think might have help ZZ get his 295 yards, but yes he can run some great pass plays.

I don't think anyone is saying it is ok. But if looking at the whole picture it wasn't that bad of a win. And the issues that we saw late game pass coverage is more then correctable.
I know we can't rely only on ZZ to have a career game every week to win it for us but und is not a bad team as much as some people want to point out. Imo they would be a middle of the pack mvfc team which is not bad. This is the first real test our secondary had this year in a tough place to play yet they found away to make the play to seal the win.
ZZ got a rest midway throguh the 4th becasuse he probably needed one. Not that coach wanted to just coast the rest of the game but the play calling is questionable in some regards but if our wr doesn't drop a pass etc etc there are plently of things to point out could have gone the other way. Und found a route to pass in our denfense it would have been nice for the coaching staff to make those adjustments but they did what a lot of teams do. Stick with the game plan. It worked well sticking with what they know for most of the game. At this point I am not worried at all. Let's see what next week looks like at home again against another tough team.

I know it's already been mentioned a few times in this thread, but our coaches just don't have a killer instinct. Seriously though, the game that shall not be mentioned in 2009, SIU Hobo Day game a couple of years ago, YSU and even USD last year, now UND....these are just the games that I know of since 2009. The only blowouts I remember in this time frame where we smelled blood and went for the kill were Georgia Southern in 2009 and EIU last year and Indiana State a few years ago when they were losing to NAIA, we also killed YSU in 2008...Butler doesn't count because we were just way more talented. We need to quit trying not to hurt feelings or what ever it is!
With that said our running game was awesome, especially considering they were stacking the box and knew what we were going to do. Sumner was a little shaky, he had some nice throws and some really bad ones. Same goes for Schneider, he had an awesome TD where he bailed out Sumner, but man that drops haunts me when we where up by 14. Our defense was great for the first 2.5 quarters, you are going to give up yards to offenses like UND, the key is to shut them down once they reach the 40 yd line, and we did. A guy like Hardin is going to get his yards no matter who they play. We weren't allowing them those 15 yard outs during the first part of the game, but decided to back off and give them in the 4th.....needless to say, I hate prevent defense. Overall though, 4th quarter play calling and execution sucked.
I guess a win is a win and I will always take being 2-0 over 1-1. SELA is going to be a dogfight, we aren't going to push them around like last year.
Anyways......GO JACKS!!! RUN RABBITS!!!
