Re: 2014 Recruiting List
While that is a very good jump for a kid that size, there is not much money (scholarships) available for D1 track and field. Due to Title IX requirements for balancing scholarships for men/women athletes, the football program eats up too many scholarships for the track program to tap into. Even if he were awarded a scholarship at an NAIA school, the extra scholarship dollars often pale in comparison to the extra tuition costs.
On a related note. Stacy Keely who left the program after his first semester at SDSU was a two-time high jump champ in Nebraska. I believe he won both years with jumps around 6'9". While he did not weigh 225 lbs, his 6'8" frame and 80" wingspan combined to make quite a target on the football field. Too bad his most noteworthy accomplishment at SDSU was winning the burger eating contest in fall camp. (Or was that his brother Eron?)
I'd still like to see JJ get an opportunity with the Jackrabbit football program!
