  • Re: 2014 Recruiting List

Has this debate been hijacked on a false premise? By my count there are four players from northwest Iowa or North Sioux City on the roster and two more from near Council Bluffs. Okay, there was perhaps one player from the same region the Jacks might have taken a chance on. But until someone shows how many more from that area of the US of A are playing on FBS or FCS teams right now, I think the debate was launched prematurely, without facts. Please come with facts to the table beyond one player.

I think Bulldog and SlapJack are friends, and that is not a problem. I would hope someone from the Football program is reading this thread, and takes it to heart. RO beat me to the punch and posted Zenner's rushing numbers against USD. Starr should have been an impact on those numbers but did not, but its hard to compare one good defensive player against a whole team of defense that, NDSU had, so no way are we comparing apples and apples.

Has anybody heard anything about Erik Ode of BV? I had heard he was planning on attending SDSU, but nothing about playing football. His older brother Ryan is a back-up O-lineman for the Jacks. A mobile 6-2, 300 pound d-lineman, I think Erik could help us out. He would probably be a better fit as a nose guard in a 3-4, but I would think he is worth a shot in a 4-3. He's as strong as an ox. I think he was on the Elite 45 a couple of times, several times all-ESD, and at least once, maybe twice, all state.

Didn't we just sign two linemen from Iowa Western ? And kids go the JUCO route for various reasons , most often academics , not being physically ready for FBS/FCS football or only having PWO or partial offers.

From the 2014 Recruiting FWIW File:

Per his Twitter (@Nettleton_8), JT Nettleton has received a Greyshirt offer from UNLV. In case you aren't familiar, grey-shirting essentially means that you will receive a scholarship after paying your own way in your first year.

I'd be willing to bet that our old friend Bobby Hauck (formally HC at Montana) is trying to allow Nettleton 1 year to focus on his academics, and assuming he does well, that will still leave him with 5 seasons of eligibility.

                Oh, P.S., Hauck is a d-bag...

Big Ticket - Agree JUCO's around the country are that way, but Iowa Western is changing the landscape. Iowa Western is attracting great kids/great students who are turning down FCS scholarship offers to take the JUCO route and get a FBS offer. McCabe was prob a 4 year starter for us and transferred at Christmas for the lure of getting a FBS offer.

UNLV is awful. Might as well go JUCO if he wants FBS that bad.

And the Jacks have seven on the roster from the same area and four new recruits? Looks like they're hanging in there against regional rivals on all levels.

Two NW IA scholarship recruits on the roster - Lansman-Harlan and Gentile-Council Bluffs and two scholarship recruited this year Joe Carbis-Council Bluffs and Chase Kern - Sioux City

Until USD kicks our butts two years in a row, I going to give our staff a vote of confidence in their recruiting choices. HS coaches play a part in kids getting scholarships, by help in putting videos together to send to various institutions. If we never get those videos, how can one know about these kids?

I know there are all kinds of scouting groups who put these videos together and even if these guys don't help out promoting, how can we possibly know about them? I am 22 miles west of Brookings, and have no relatives that I know about in Lyons County, Iowa. I like to spend a few bucks at casinos, and have yet to travel Great Falls, since they are sucking money out of South Dakota, I don't see any need of me contributing to this lost cause.

Lets face it, there are more candidates to choose from than there are scholarships to hand out.
That is a fact of life. Life is becoming more competitive.

Plus two from Iowa western that equals four recruits. I realize you said high school scholarships, but the two from Iowa western count in our 21 signees.

Don't forget we are losing scholarships to JUCO Iowa Western so says bulldog, but how do you explain we got two back from Iowa Western? Kind of a wash if you ask me, but what do I know?

                                Bulldog:
You have been persistent in making the argument that SDSU’s football coaches have failed to recruit NW Iowa. No question that fan message boards are appropriate forums for such arguments and opinions (although one could say the horse is dead and there’s no use in beating it any more). But, your persistence in making the argument causes me to have a number of questions, some of which are:

Do you know which coach or coaches are to blame for these recruiting errors?

When a problem seems so obvious to a fan (or coach or parent), doesn’t that fan have some duty to contact the athletic department and point out the recruiting errors? Have you had the "Look, idiot, you don’t know up from down about recruiting" conversation (in more appropriate language, of course)?

Which recruited athletes should we have turned away or not recruited so that we had room for the NW Iowa athletes? Who on the current roster should not be on the roster so that we had more NW Iowa athletes? (Curious: Would this NW Iowa affirmative action plan work to the disadvantage of Eastern South Dakota athletes or any other group? Geez, now maybe I’ll start fighting with you.)

If scholarships had been offered to the NW Iowa athletes you identify, are you certain they would have accepted them?
