Hopefully the voters on the national level do their home work better then the confrence voters when they look at it.

      Re: Sumner -- national recognition

Austin Sumner might be the most valuable freshman to his team in all of the FCS (we're more than likely 2-9 without him), but I'd be surprised if he wins the Jerry Rice Award (given to the top freshman in the nation). While his stats are awesome, there are a couple freshman who are playoff teams that have some pretty amazing numbers.

Most likely the winner will be the running back for the CAA champion Towson Tigers, Terrance West. He is averaging 124.2 yards/game, 6.8 yards/carry, and has scored 27 touchdowns in 10 games. Add that with the fact he is the only freshman to be nominated as a finalist for the Payton Award (best offensive player in the FCS), I'd be shocked if he didn't get it.

Sumner will be competing for runner up in the voting with quarterback Taylor Heinicke of Old Dominion, a CAA team that received an at-large playoff birth.

(2011 Reg. Season) Games Comp-Att-Int Comp % Passing Yards TD Passing Yards/Game
      Austin Sumner 10 182-305-9 59.7 2382 16 238.2
      Taylor Heinicke 8 186-263-1 70.7 2039 20 254.9

Now as Jackrabbit fans, we know that Austin only had 1 drive in 2 of those 10 games, but to an average voter his mop up duty in the Illinois and Cal Poly games hurt his statistics (i.e. 289.6 yards/game in games Sumner started). Plus, as SDSU fans, we know Sumner had no running game to support him and was under tons of pressure to make plays if the team even wanted a shot at winning most of our games.

That being said, I think Austin will take 3rd in the voting behind West and Heinicke... and regardless of the outcome, I wouldn't trade Sumner for either of these two.

Biggest difference, to me anyway, is the completion percentage. Austin was great, but based on those stats, the other kid probably deserves it more.

To win it would be great but to be nominated is not a small thing at all. It just shows what hopefully is 3 more years of this. I felt like he was able to learn on the fly and make adjustments. And a lot of his mistakes he's made are correctable. Biggest thing I think he will learn is when to throw it away and when to run it.

Sumner was named to the MVFC all-newcomer team along will Dale Moss, Schlautman and Zach Zenner. Sumner was also named the MVFC newcomer of the year.

According to TV's twitter, "SDSU QB Austin Sumner places 3rd in the inaugural Jerry Rice Award (top freshman in the FCS). Towson RB West 1st, ODU QB Heinicke 2nd." Those games were he played for one series is what killed his stats and his chances of winning. Still cool knowing that our QB was the third best freshman in FCS. And to think he wouldnt have started for another two years. Crazy stuff man

Third place is pretty impressive considering the fact that he did not get the start the first few games. We have a lot to look forward to with Sumner. Hopefully we'll have the high-quality receivers to take full advantage of his skills. If so, look out.

+1. Sumner has all the talent of any great QB at this level. But, if he isn't surrounded by guys that have ability in the WR and TE areas, that talent will be wasted. Will the coaching philosophy change to a more pass first concept? It will be fascinating to watch. But, having ahigh caliber QB may just sway a few recruits.

I don't know about fascinating. SDSU is only two QB's removed from one of the prolific QB's in school history.

What does that matter? Austin just placed 3rd in voting for an award given the the best freshman in FCS.

Austin's numbers are comparable to Ryan's when Ryan was a junior. Plus, Austin played in essentially, three less games than Ryan.

If you don't think he will be fascinating to watch, then what will be?

Berry had not only good TEs but he also had that home run threat in Harris. That is what I am talking about, if you surround Sumner with the weapons that enhance his skills and he won't be one of the most prolific passers in school history, he will be the most prolific.

Let's not forget that the odds of him winning would have been even better had the coaching staff been able to see he was clearly the best QB on the roster when the season started.

Congratulations to Austin Sumner. He is the qb as of now, and a darn good one at that.

I drove by the high school yesterday and saw Austin and Aaron Rollin getting in some work. Also, Ethan Sawyer was out doing some punting.
