  • Re: MO State GDT

My first football game since WIU in 2009. Although a bit slow out of the box on a few occasions, Sumner looked like the real deal as QB. Much better than TOB with roughly the same number of games under his belt. Both QB's looked pretty good. Other than that, it was an interesting game between two not very good teams, but I got the idea that things are improving. Something I didn't see in 2009, where the team was in a bit of a late season stumble.

The crowd was unbelievably into it. Then the homecoming royalty and band awards were given and the halftime festivities were over. Not many there in the second half. Mostly run away students. Sad.

I know that I am not a coach but there are a few things that I didn't agree with.
      1) Going for the 2 point conversion in the 1st half. I understand if it is late in the game but we are playing the worst(record wise) team on the schedule and the coach is saying that he doesn't think we will score more than 3 points the rest of the game. Good thing SDSU didn't lose in OT because you could safely say that going for 2 would have cost them the game.
      2) Kicking the ball out of bounds on the kickoff. I could be wrong but has any team ran a kickoff back on SDSU this year. Isn't this the 2nd week in a row that they've kicked it out of bounds? I know coach Stig said it was his fault for having an inexperienced kicker do that last game but he did it again.
      3) How about going for it on 4th and 1 in our territory with 1 minute left in the 1st half. I know that they called a penalty so SDSU ended up punting it but if you don't make it, they only have about 20 yards to get into field goal range. On the other hand SDSU still would have to get about 40 yards to get in field goal range. Wasn't the ball around the SDSU 40 yard line? Maybe they were just trying to get an offsides penalty but I don't think so. Why would you get a false start if you aren't going to run a play. SDSU has had problem getting 1 yard when it is 1st and goal from the 1 let alone when it is 4th and 1.
SDSU did win the game so all of this is meaningless but it was just stuff that had this "armchair" coach confused.

Ironically, the whole pie thing is becoming worthy of a pie message.

Yeah, but did you use a chart to pick your pie or did you go with your gut feeling? Ya know, it really does depend on what the situation is as to what type of pie you should pick. You just may not be the right person for this whole pie eating thing if you have to refer to a chart to determine what you are going to eat on a given day!

I wasn't commenting on #3 until someone else did. My neck was so sore from the 2 point attempt all I could do was scream in disbelief when I heard we were going for it in that situation. Thank God for the false start or the grease fire our coaches were trying to start would have been way out of control. I know we aren't suppose to be critical of these guys but glaring mistakes like this should be discussed. I'm glad the Jacks have another game this weekend and I hope we aren't discussing these same issues next week.
