    Re: Illinois state

This was obvious but now it's official. Per Terry Vandrovec @TerryVandrovec

"SDSU football coach John Stiegelmeier tells Sioux Falls booster group that redshift freshman Austin Sumner will start at QB Saturday."

Also something else to note ...

"Stiegelmeier also said that DT Bryan Burke is out for the year, DT Chase Douglas is out 2-4 weeks and all three SAM LBs are hurt."

      Re: Illinois state

Last week in the MVC Teleconference, Youngstown head coach stated that Illinois State has the conference's best QB, WR, & O-Line.

One thing is for sure, with a new QB, the Redbirds are going to stack the line and make us pass the ball.

The big issue is how many players will be out for this game.

List of players that are either questionable or out:

      QB O'Brien - Out
      TE Daughters - Out
      OL Kage - Questionable
      OL Olinger - Questionable

      DT Douglas - Out
      LB Tracy - Out
      DE LaBlance - Out
      DE Kennedy - Questionable
      LB Feller - Questionable
      FS Wise - Questionable

        Re: Illinois state

The Jacks need to come out and establish a running game. After week 1 everyone seemed to say "Kyle who?". Well rushing 20 times for 40 yards like Kool and Zenner did last week isn't resembling Kyle Minett whatsoever. The Redbirds defense appears to be as bad as their offense is good. Smack the birds in the mouth and keep their offense off the field. If it doesn't happen, the 31-14 loss is going to be a pretty accurate prediction.

The first three quarters of the season appear to be far in the rear view mirror. The T-birds have ripped off a couple of good wins (ok, I don't know who UT-San Antonio really is) since the opening loss. So. Utah is no slouch and it will be important for the front 7 of the Jacks to keep the ISU-Red quarterback on his toes and the pressure off the secondary like early against the T-birds.

The Jacks need to attempt to erase the drama and go find the team we saw for the opener. Easier said than done...for sure. A win here and coming home at 2-2 with 3 of the next 4 at home may bring a refreshment to everyone.

          Re: Illinois state

ISU gave up only 63 yards rushing and 304 passing vs. Eastern Illinois (a pass-first team); -48 yards rushing but 371 yards passing to Pioneer League team Morehead; and 164 rushing/293 passing to Youngstown.

Looks like they're more vulnerable to the pass, although none of those teams is really a rushing powerhouse.
          Holy nutmeg!

I think this could be a hunker down its us against the world kind of game. Lets hope the boys pull together and put on a show.

Having a total of 3 healthy linebackers (none who have played the Sam position to date) is not a good thing.

                    Re: Illinois state

I know this game is going to be hard. I worry some with the injuries on D. But at the same time, I can only think is that even if we are thin, it gives the team experience and a chance to prove themselves. I just hope the offense works well enough to let sumner make some reads and not rushed. that means Line, hold the pass D back, and means get a good push running the ball. I would love to see the team come out and ready to give it all. Its not bad to lose as long as you lose to team that proves then are better on the field. Give it everything you can and things will work out in the end. LETS GO JACKS.

                      Re: Illinois state

what would help the defense is an offense that can control the ball for long drives and top and keep the defense off the field. 3 and outs aren't going to cut it. so says mr obvious.

                          Got any eligibility left?

This might be more of a difficult spot than the new quarterback this week. Especially against a good offensive team.

I think we have the Redbirds right where we want them. What the heck is an opposing coach supposed to do with a team like ours? Study game film for the past three years? Sure, some basic things won't change but we have a quarterback who, if given the chance (or given no other choice), can run and he's big enough to get some yards. Our recruiting has been good so even though injuries are causing significant problems, the backups have a great opportunity to show why they attracted the attention of the coaches in the first place.
