  • Oct 17 rankings

As the season unfolds, the computer ranking systems gain credibility. SDSU, now 2-4 for the season, is moving up and that validates what many said pre-season: SDSU had the toughest schedule in the country among FCS schools. In this morning's USA/Sagarin rankings of all D1 schools, FCS and FBS, Western Illinois is the top-ranked Valley school at 74. SDSU is the second-highest Valley school at 115.

Other Valley schools: Northern Iowa, 116; NDSU, 121; Indiana State, 122; Illinois State, 148, Youngstown State, 149; Missouri State, 150; and Southern Illinois, 153.

The highest ranking FCS team is Delaware at 56.

The Sagarin rankings are probably their most "accurate" after all the games are played and the season concluded. And of course, the beauty of the game is that at any time, any team can get a win in spite of rankings, polls etc.

The Valley is ranked #14 of all conferences, FCS and FBS. There are two FCS conferences ranked ahead of the Valley: the Big Sky at 11 and the Colonial 12.

As Sagarin says: "The teams are now WELL CONNECTED and so all three ratings are UNBIASED." Basically that means that it's all about this year from this point forward . . . I believe Sagarin uses last year to "seed" his ratings in the beginning of the season, to give the computer something to munch on. He doesn't have to do that any more now, because enough teams have played each other this year that he can build a complete rating list from this year's results.

From here on out, it's all about the performance on the field.

If I counted correctly, Sagarin would have SDSU at #22 in FCS.
    "I think we'll be OK"
