Re: Pregame Brawl - Illinois State Article

Whoever started the "near brawl" (doesn't a brawl require physical contact?) it was stupid and shouldn't happen again. That's not Jackrabbit football.

But Coach Spack needs a fact check here:

“We were bringing our team out, coming down the hill (from the locker room),” ISU coach Brock Spack said. “All of a sudden, we look up and their whole team is coming down and they’re in the red zone. We couldn’t even take the field.”

Our players were maybe down to the 10 yard line. Last time I checked, that leaves 20 yards for the Redbirds to come in. And if you add the 10 yards behind the end zone, they had plenty of space. I think maybe Spack likes having a team with a chip on its shoulder (and there's nothing wrong with that if you can back it up... and they did.)
    Holy nutmeg!

The scuffle was at the south side...so one team (SDSU) ran about 100 yards to the scuffle site, the other about 10. But it was all amplified by the SDSU players not knowing where to go and the band being on the field and the ISU players likely not being sure here to run with so many others on the field.

Anyhow, like another poster said, too bad we didn't show half as much fight and energy during the game.
I think it all had to do with the pregame, too. The band was on the field the last 30 minutes before the game. They were on the field when the team was coming out of the locker room. I guess the team could have walked goal around the field to get to their sideline but I'm sure they didn't appreciate that.
The SDSU player that I remember most was General Parnell. He was down near the line jumping around. There were some other SDSU players down there but I don't remember who they were. I think it might have looked like the ISU players were going to go on the field and the SDSU players got in their way.
BirdGrad- I was SDSU would have played better in the first 3 quarters but they didn't. ISU was the better team(on that day) and deserved to win the game. Good luck to your team the rest of the way, too.

According to TV Tuesday Tidbits blog, there will be no penalities handout to squad members because of the alleged pregame brawl. Here is the link to Terry's blog

When I think of the ISU coaches trying to stop a herd of cattle going down the wrong road, I kind of feel for those guys and our logistics for the first game really stunk. I said in another thread all this stuff was kind of secondary, but I retract that comment. Having a pregame brawl is not something the MVFC or anyone else connected to each institution would want to see to see happen.

My mind keeps going back to a Clemson- South Carolina game where a pregame brawl did happened and its not pretty. Some one can easily get hurt.

I just wanted to come over and say thanks for getting our guys so fired up just prior to kick off. I was really upset about the whole thing until I found out how much it motivated them.

According to Davis, the encounter held considerable motivational value.
“It got me pumped up and got a lot of other people pumped up,” he said. “I was shaking afterward I was so pumped up. I was ready to go.”
Defensive tackle Eric Brunner said the incident only added to already high emotions.
“I don’t know if that is some sort of intimidation tactic they use. We came into the game fired up as it is,” said Brunner. “It was a huge win. We found out a lot about ourselves coming into a hostile environment.

You were upset? Ha. It's football, calm down, Nancy.

It could be called many things but but football? No! There is no reason for this kind of action as well as the 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct and taunting penalties your team incurred. If you agree with this type of behavior then again I say "Thank you"!

Disregard Rabbit Observer. He is a USD Coyote in disguise.

I did not like the penalities and most of us on this board are not proud of our team's mistakes and actions. Whether it was the alleged brawl or not, the penalites, are something I am not proud of.

It appears just adding a new student center at he north end of the field kind of upset the normal routines of pregame events. Normally the Jacks would have entered the field where the Redbirds did this year, plus the band was still on the field and our guys coming in from the north were doing their warmups. Never before in my years of watching football at CAS have we had an opportunity for comfortation like we had Saturday. Adjustments in protocol need to be made and they will. ISU might have gotten motivation from this miscue in protocol, but rest assured they will not have this opportunity next time they visit. Good luck to the Redbirds against Missouri State.

Much like your QB taunting our sidelines after the 1st touchdown they scored. It went both ways.

I guess i didn't realize that yapping constituted a pre-game brawl or even a near brawl. In that case, I'm embarrassed to admit that I've been in several near brawls in my fantasy league.
