  • Successful opener for X-Country

SDSU's Cross Country men and women had a very successful season opener at Fargo Friday afternoon.

For the men, Coach Rod Dehaven's oustanding freshman recruiting class showed what it is capable of doing with a decisive win in Fargo...links to the story on GoJacks.com and the meet results on NDSU's official site are below. Freshman Mike Krsnak of Rapid City made a statement with an outstanding second-place finish, just 8+ seconds behind NDSU's very good senior, Shanandore. Next Saturday, the Jackrabbits run at the OZ Invitational in Minneapolis. Senior Joe Roby will join the team for the Minneapolis run (he's in his fifth year in pharmacy which means he's living in and attending classes in Sioux Falls and basically training by himself).

For the women, the entire squad returns from last year and while they finished second to NDSU in Fargo, Friday afternoon. The top Jackrabbit, Nicole Davis seems to improve each race, a trend she started a year ago ago followed through the spring track season. Last year's team leader, Caitlin Berry is recovering nicely from a leg injury and continues to regain her old form. While the NDSU women won the meet, it's not likely they'll beat the Jackrabbits again this season. The women run at the OZ meet in Minneapolis next Saturday.

On both teams, there will be a lot of internal competition for the top spots and that will produce results when the teams are competing against other schools. The goal is to have your seven runners be tightly bunched at the lead of the pack and these teams can do that.

Saw that the women had 5 of the top ten finishers and still finished second. That's got to be tough.
