Jackrabbit men finished 2nd and the women 3rd at the Jackrabbit Classic held Saturday, October 1.
In the men's race, Nebraska finished first. In the women's race, Minnesota was first followed by Nebraska.
At the end of the meet, U of Nebraska Coach Jay Dirksen, a former standout distance runner for the Jacks and Jackrabbit coach, received special recognition. The men's race at the Classic will now be called the "Jay Dirksen Men's 8k" in his honor. From the story on GoJacks.com: "South Dakota State also took the time to honor former SDSU head coach Jay Dirksen. Dirksen began his coaching career as the head men's cross country and track and field coach at SDSU. After six years leading the men, Dirksen started the women's cross country program. He coached six NCAA Division II champions and 34 NCAA Division II All-Americans in eight years at South Dakota State. The men's cross country team won the 1973 NCAA Division II Cross Country championship."
