HUNTSVILLE, Texas — South Dakota State recorded season highs in runs and hits, posting a 20-4, eight-inning victory over Saint Louis (Mo.) in college baseball action Sunday at the Ford Bearkat Classic.

The Jackrabbits, who won three of four games in the three-day tournament, improved to 4-6 overall. SLU dropped to 2-8.

Trailing 3-2 after four innings, SDSU took the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning. Korby Mintken led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a base hit by Nick Adams. Tim Hanigan and Max Fenske each delivered run-scoring singles and Hanigan scored the final run of the frame with a steal of home on the back end of a double steal.

SDSU added three more runs in the sixth inning. Jesse Ayala opened the inning with a double and scored on a Mintken triple. Tyson Fisher plated Mintken with a base hit and Craig Parry followed with a run-scoring double.

The Jackrabbits ended any hopes of an SLU comeback by hanging 11 runs on the board in the top of the eighth. SDSU sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring the 11 runs on five hits and taking advantage of four walks and two hit batters off three different pitchers — two of whom did not record an out. Freshman Billy Stitz hit a two-run home run and Fisher added a three-run blast to close out the scoring.

Eight of SDSU’s 17 hits went for extra bases. Fenske added a solo home run in the fourth en route to a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. Hanigan added three hits, while Mintken, Fisher and Parry added two hits apiece. Mintken scored five runs after also drawing three walks.

Newcomer Robert Butler picked up his first victory in a Jackrabbit uniform after pitching the first five innings. He struck out seven and walked two, while also allowing seven hits.

Dave Sever took the loss for the Billikens after pitching the first five innings.

SDSU returns to the diamond Tuesday, when it travels to Nebraska. First pitch is slated for 1:35 p.m. at Hawks Field in Lincoln, Neb.
