Perhaps the best way to describe Kevin Morsching the ballplayer is to say he reminded us this summer why it is we love to watch the game.

Against a backdrop of endless steroid controversies, officials who gamble, asterisks being placed next to records and psycho dog murderers, Kevin and his Humboldt Crabs teammates gave North Coast sports fans the opportunity to escape all of that.

And none of them epitomized what being a Crabs player should be better than Kevin.

His infectious enthusiasm for the game is an all-too rare commodity in the world of sports and the endless energy he brought to the Arcata Ballpark can’t but have touched everyone who got to know him this summer.

In addition, he was a shining example to the countless young fans who adore the Crabs players, a cordial guy who was well-liked by his teammates and respected by those in the stands, and someone whose body language alone showcased his pride of and love for being a Crabs player.

When Kevin was called into action out of the bullpen, on an almost nightly basis, he didn’t hurry to the mound; he sprinted there, almost as if he couldn’t get into the game quickly enough.

When he was waiting in the bullpen, presumably impatiently so, he was always the first to run down a foul ball, again sprinting to do so almost as if he was somehow born with twice the daily allowance of energy recommended by the Surgeon General and had to find some way to offload it all.

Like many Crabs players who arrive in Arcata for the first time in early June, Kevin probably wasn’t sure just what he’d gotten himself into, landing in one of the few parts of California the rest of the state (and time) seems to have forgotten, in a climate few people deem worthy of calling a summer.

But it didn’t take him long to adjust, and after a few weeks and several appearances playing in front of a packed Arcata Ballpark, Kevin came to the same conclusion countless other Crabs players have come to before him and the same conclusion countless others will come to in the future.

“I love this place,” he told me one night.

          Re: Kevin Morsching

Kirby Morsching posted this on Facebook at about 2 a.m. this morning in a thread called "How we said goodbye."

"Kirby Morsching wrote 7 hours ago
Kevin lost all of his functions today on his last battle on earth. He was strong till the end and never did give up. He did something that will never be done again by making the choice himself not to live. He took it into his own hands to pass on so my parents didn't have to make the choice for him. He will live on through everyone that has ever met him. Kevin will still live on in us for the rest of our time in our hearts, and some very lucky people will get the gift of a lifetime when they get Kev's organs. Some very lucky kid will get the strongest heart ever placed on this earth. We struggled for only 6 days till we lost him, and some family will end years of struggles with his heart.

          Kirby"

What a horrible, horrible situation. My heart goes out to Kevin's family and friends.
          Holy nutmeg!

My condolences to the Morsching family, Kevin's friends and teammates. Tragedy can certainly stike anyone of us at any time. It sounds like the family is a strong one and they can rely on each other.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Morsching family and Kevin's friends!

Answers are tough to find at a time like this but they will come through faith.

Life is so precious and can end at any time, make the most of every day.

It is heartening to hear that even though Kevin has passed that he will give the gift of life by donating his organs to those in dire need.

                  Peace be with you.

                    Re: Kevin Morsching

When all is said and done, our discussions about SDSU and the Jackrabbits pale when compared to the life (and sadly, passing) of a young man who obviously had a passion for life. It has a tendency of snapping things back into perspective.

To the Morschings... please accept our deepest condolences. Know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

                      Re: Kevin Morsching

Mark O did a little story about Kevin on KDLT at 6 o'clock. It seemed like he got a bit choked up doing the story. At 10 o'clock there is going to be interviews with Reggie and some others.

Let me add my prayers for the Morsching family. And I'll extend that to his girlfriend Kristina Martin, and all his other friends and acquaintances. It is a tragic loss...and I know all the SDSU family shares in it.

Summit League story on Kevin Morsching

Our colleagues in the Summit League had a nice tribute to Kevin Morsching on the conference's web-site:

ELMHURST, Ill. South Dakota State University baseball player Kevin Morsching passed away late Sunday night at a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital, one week after being injured in an accident in Brookings, S.D.[/font]

The Summit League is deeply saddened by the news of Kevin’s passing,” Commissioner Tom Douple said. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and the entire South Dakota State Athletic Department.”

Funeral Arrangement have been posted on the Argus Leader web site.

Is SDSUFans.com going to send a floral arrangement? I would chip in some cash.
