MINERS GET TWO PITCHERS FROM SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
(April 16)
LITTLE FALLS — Little Falls’ New York Collegiate Baseball League entry has mined South Dakota State University for pitching talent once again in 2007.
The Miners announced the signings of sophomores Isaac Johnson and Caleb Thielbar Monday. They follow teammate Matt Bowman to Little Falls after Bowman turned in a fine 2006 season with the team that was known at the time as the Diamond Miners.
Thielbar has started nine games this spring and leads the Jackrabbits with five victories. The Randolph, Minn., native owns a 3.24 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 50 innings after finishing his freshman year with a record of 3-4.
Johnson, a native of Verndale, Minn., is 1-0 with three saves and a 3.27 ERA pitching out of the Jackrabbits’ bullpen. He has struck out 16 batters and walked nine in 22 innings. His first college victory came in a 10-7 win against Murray State March 9. Johnson appeared in 16 games as a freshman.
Bowman has been the No. 1 starter for South Dakota State this spring and has won his last three starts to improve his record to 4-2. His personal winning streak coincided with a stretch that saw the Jackrabbits win seven times in eight games. While with the Diamond Miners last summer, Bowman split four decisions with a 3.18 ERA while exhibiting exceptional control, walking eight batters in 65 innings. . . . (read more)
