  • Best Rabbit Ever?

Any chances that one of these jacks are the best of all time? I mean Joel Blake has great stats. Billy Stitz has about 40 school records. And Trever is just ridiculous. Just wondering what ya think.

Can't forget about Jesse Sawyer as the best power hitter ever for the Jacks and P Treinen will probably end up being one of if not the highest drafted SDSU player. ( A baseball america article guestimated him as a 5th round pick a couple weeks ago)

Sawyer may be the best power hitter but his other stats aren't great. Average.. Defense.. I'm looking for best ever! And Treinen is drafted on potential not skill. His stats this year are really weak for a 97 mph fastball in the summit league.

Hard to pick from the three you mentioned. Billy Stitz is a remarkable outfielder (wheels get him to lots of balls that a lot of centerfielders wouldn't get to), has career hits record among others and it's great fun to watch him run the bases. Joel Blake is just one tough cookie. He plays every play hard, is a great competitor and a clutch hitter when things are on the line. He's the key player every team needs, or wants, anyway! As for Verm...he is, in my opinion anyway, the best lock-down reliever SDSU has ever had. He struggles a little more with lefties, but owns the righties. And his story (so-so overhand HS pitcher, to a sidewinder in the top 15 in the nation with 20-plus saves last year and this) is just remarkable. Take your pick!

If nothing else, Joel Blake proved once again yesterday that he is the most valuable player player on the team. Price last week proclaimed him the best player on the team and that he has been for years.

3.49 ERA and 1.32 WHIP is not a bad college line...

So if a pinch hitter wins the second game today he's the best Jack of all time? The ? was about a career, not a single game.

And as if on cue Treinan throws a five-hit, seven-inning shutout in a must-win game and lowers his ERA to 3.16 and his WHIP to 1.29. He's struck out 79 in 76 2/3 innings. Nothing weak about that.

Not saying Treinen is great. But no where near the best rabbit ever. And his draft status is based on potential not on numbers and current skill. There is no doubt he is potentially going to go the further then any of them.

Know this is a little late for when it was first posted, but on the topic of the best Jack of all time, I want you all to take a look at what Billy McMacken did during his career at SDSU in the batter's box and on the mound. One of the sweetest swings I've seen and a very good lefty on the mound. Go back in Jacks history a few more years then five to look at the best.

BillMcMacken is undoubtly the Michael Jordan of SD ameatur baseball. In terms of the greatest ever it has to be Gregg Kelliveg or Wade Adamson who played AAA baseball (if you try to use an objective measure)

Bill McMacken should have been drafted, I had five left handed pitchers drafted in my tenure and McMacken was better than all of them. He could have played in the WCC, Big West or PAC 10

I am coming back to this party a little late, but think about the quality of player from now and then. McMacken was clearly great in his time but playing a far less quality of opponent. If the current SDSU team would play Mt. Marty and DWU and Augustana every weekend, then they would have inflated numbers as well. I think there is a lot to be said about the last 6 years because of who they have to play. I would say look at the record books, and compare. There are too many generations here for us to use the eye test because most of us probably havn't seen most of these players, I have played with a lot of these guys new and old and can tell you that you can make an easy argument that Stitz and Joel Blake are better than McMacken but i see the argument the other way as well...

                              Re: Best Rabbit Ever?

I'm not sure about many people from the past but I feel like putting the best players from the past 5-6 years might help in this forum. These are just my thoughts but they were some pretty solid ball players:

                              Catcher
Tony Martin: I feel like this is an obvious choice as he put up great numbers.

                              Infield
Greg Geary: Good defensively and a better hitter. Had the HR record for a few years before Sawyer.
Jake Rogers: Mid-round draft pick with a great glove and a better hitter.
Jesse Sawyer: Very good hitter but not as solid in the field. Head case as well.
Joel Blake: Best pure hitter in the last ten years for SDSU and very underrated 1st baseman
Korby Mintkin: Made some errors but got to more balls deep in the hole than most.

                              Pitchers
Trever Verm: Door was shut...thats it. Nothing like sealing the deal every time.
Blake Treinen: Throws gas but to get hit around like that in the Summit also says something.
Matt Bowman: Constantly throwing strikes with 3 pitches.

                              Outfield
Billy Stitz: Fast, decent arm and good stick (he's in the record books for a reason).
Nick Adams: Fell off towards the end of his career but he had a great arm and caught everything
Tim Hannigan: Not one outfielder (possibly ever) got better jumps on fly balls. He was camped
before most outfielders got into position.

Biggest pimped HR: Cal Lewis vs IPFW in 2007 (he got pulled running around 3rd base after standing
at home plate until the ball left the park and re-sheathing his "sword").

Thought I'd include the last one to throw out a different kind of all time best. This forum should be title (either): Best Player at SDSU: D-I; or Best Player at D-II. Its like comparing apples or oranges as the teams played are different and competition obviously gets better.

Out of the people I included, how can Trever Vermeulen not be the best. When he was on the field (junior and senior seasons), the door was sealed shut with no hope to get back into the game. Absolutely devastating in the last inning. He was one of the top pitchers in the country.
