BROOKINGS, SD - South Dakota State University pitcher Blake Treinen was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday afternoon.
Treinen, who wrapped up his collegiate career with the Jackrabbits last month, improved his standing by 16 rounds and nearly 500 spots from the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft as he was the 226th player taken in this year's amateur draft. The Osage City, Kan., native was a 23rd-round draft choice - 707th player overall - of the Florida Marlins last year, but opted to return to SDSU for his senior season.
By round, Treinen's selection was the highest by a Jackrabbit player since Wade Adamson was taken in the fourth round - 94th overall - of the 1978 June Regular Draft by the Minnesota Twins. By pick, Treinen's selection was the highest since Rich Morehouse was the 199th overall player selected in the eighth round of the 1985 June Regular Draft by the California Angels.
In his two seasons with the Jackrabbits, Treinen was a two-time first-team all-Summit League honoree, posting a 14-4 career record with 166 strikeouts in 159.1 innings. During the 2011 season, the right-hander posted a 7-3 record and 3.00 earned-run average in 13 starts. His 84 strikeouts tied for the third most in a season by an SDSU hurler, and his 166 strikeouts rank fourth all-time.
Treinen's selection marks the fifth consecutive year South Dakota State has had a player taken in the Major League Baseball Draft: infielder Jake Rogers was a 22nd-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2007; outfielder Craig Parry was drafted in the 50th round of the 2008 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates and left-handed pitcher Caleb Thielbar was an 18th-round selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2009.

We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
He should sign in the next 10-15 days. I'd guess the signing bonus will be in the 5-20K range. He will probably then go to either low A or short season rookie ball. From most reports I've read, they expect him to be a reliever for the rest of the year to keep his innings down and then make a a final decision on what he will be next year during spring training.
Way to go Blake and best of luck! I especially appreciate his attitude towards being a Jackrabbit and having been given the opportunity to play at South Dakota State.
