players wore black, circular patches with his initials on their jerseys.

Seeings how the guy's full name is already on their uniform.

So what would be distinctive just wearing thier "regular" uniforms without
the black patches pertaining to Oral Roberts passing?

A black band on the shoulder used to be standard, before the sewing equivalent of CNC made embroidery dirt cheap.
