  • Summit League Basketball Tournament Announcement

    From TV's Twitter this morning:

The Summit League is holding a press conference @ the Arena today. Looks like the conference hoops tourney will stay here in 2011-12.

Just noticed that the Summit League put the story up on the league site at almost the same time the press conference was scheduled to start.

Excellent! Coach Nagy and Coach Johnston are certainly as excited as I am. Its a definite advantage to play close to home with a shot at the big dance on the line. Time to make that week in March an annual gathering for family and friends in Sioux Falls.

What year will USD and UND be able to play in the Tournament? Is it just the last year it will be in S.F.? I know NDSU's Men's probably wont be as good as they were last year but SDSU's should be better. NDSU's Women should only improve. If either of these teams played USD in the Championship, the place would sell out. I could see semifinals with NDSU, USD, SDSU and Oakland; that would really sell out that old building.

Yes, a Dakota's semi & final should bring down the rafter hangers. Especially, if SDSU, or the best 4 teams can bring in RPI's of under 75. Means the Summit League members need to start winning their OOC's, and especially vs the BCS upper crust teams (Vanderbilt, LSU, Rutgers, Louisville, Oklahoma, for example)

Great news, but not really a surprise. Sioux Falls set a whole new standard and if the other members don't want to see it here every year they'd better step it up.

Also.....I think it will be bigger next year! The SDSU women will still be favorites....the SDSU men will be improved.....the USD and even UND people feel like they are part of this league now and more of their people will show up....the people who came last year will for sure be back but also the people who missed it and have had to hear about it for a year are going to show up.....some people, like me, will spring for better/reserved seats now that we know it's going to be successful and full.....the corporate sponsorship should also continue to rise as will our familiarity w/ the Summit League.

UND is not in the conference, maybe they will be by then.

USD is not eligible until 2013.

That is correct. USD and potentially UND will be transitional league members for the second two seasons the tournament will be in Sioux Falls. So for the first 4 years the Summit League Tournament is in Sioux Falls also are the 4 years the Coyotes and Flickertails are transitioning.

Re: Summit League Basketball Tournament Announcement

If Sioux Falls is more or as successful in hosting the Summit League Championships for the next three years 2010-12. And if they place a bid for 2013 and 14 it will be hard for the Summit League to pass up, especially when USD is first year eligible. SDSU Women should still be an upper tier mid-major team. USD Women should be descent. The SDSU Men's team is creating some excitement again. Both the SDSU and NDSU Men are getting very good recruiting classes. Not sure how USD's going to be, but they have some locals that people might want to watch play. Plus Oakland and ORU are usually in the upper half of the conference and bring fans.

That's a good recommendation: 8/31 deadline in the calendar.

Last year's tourney was a lot of fun and I have to believe this year's attendance will surpass last year's based on the great comments made by last year's attendees.
