  • Und and ndsu ad's talking future schedules

I do not know if this should go in the Summit or College Athletics category, but since UND appears to be interested in becoming part of the Summit I leave it here. Here is an interesting article in the Fargo Forum.

North Dakota State and the University of North Dakota could renew their sports rivalry as soon as the 2010-11 school year, but the school’s athletic directors still have yet to set a date to talk about it.

UND athletic director Brian Faison recently called NDSU athletic director Gene Taylor to alert him of the State Higher Board of Education’s May 14 decision to retire UND’s Fighting Sioux logo unless it gets the blessings of the two namesake tribes. The topic of scheduling came up.

    “Albeit briefly,” Faison said.

“We agreed to get together at some point in the near future and begin to discuss the possibility of scheduling some sports,” Taylor said. “Our conversation really had nothing to do with their logo issue.”

Taylor said the earliest NDSU would start scheduling UND in some sports would be the 2010-11 school year. He added that the earliest NDSU would schedule UND in football would be 2012.

NDSU and UND last played each other in football in 2003. The men’s and women’s basketball teams last met during the 2003-04 season.

Since then, NDSU has completed its transition to Division I. UND is finishing its second year of the five-year transition to Division I.

UND would like to join NDSU in The Summit League, a 10-team league that does not include football. But Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple has stated the league will not consider UND for expansion until it resolves its nickname issue with the NCAA.

But it appears the league has softened its stance from earlier this year when Douple cautioned Summit League schools to schedule UND for nonconference games.

“There is really nothing we could do to prevent the member schools from scheduling them,” said David Brauer, Summit League director of media relations.

“We’re not going to stand in the way of the schools’ nonconference scheduling. That’s up to the individual institutions.” [QUOTE]

That comment makes me laugh, they have flopped a couple times on this just like the NCAA and they say whatever suits them.

At first the Summit League according to Douple has no policy preventing schools from playing UND. But, NDSU states that they could not play UND because of Summit League policy.. then Douple comes up with - "we tell teams to be cautious when scheduling UND". Now they have this.. SDSU is a part of Summit League what is your policy on playing UND?

To the topic of the schools playing.. it makes way too much sense to play given the economy. I wonder how much of this is being driven by UND wanting to get the name change out of the news and NDSU wanting something other than arrest reports. The two schools have found common ground neither schools likes bad pub.

We aren't refusing to schedule them for at least all sports, as we played them in baseball already this year.

So, SDSU has gone with the "Schedule them but be cautious approach" - good choice.. I think several of the other Summit League schools have done that also.

I think a better way of stating it would be "SDSU schedules them when it makes sense."

I do get a kick out of the Grand Forks hysteria over Commissioner Douple. Long live the king, but shoot the messenger!!! The Summit League is not a fiefdom. The staff, including Douple, acts at the behest of the presidents of the schools in the Summit. He acts as their spokesman on issues which they have decided is the correct position for the Summit League.

The NDSU football team is in the Missouri valley Football Conference today and they were last night.

UND is in the GWC and is actively begging to get into the MVFC.

Without NDSU, UND is nothing. The past 5 years have illuminated that point.

The actions of UND as they try to push themselves into the Summit and the MVFC shows how desperate UND is. They want everything NDSU has and just a few short years ago they wanted nothing to do with NDSU or Division 1 athletics, except hockey of course. How can they possibly be taken seriously.

I am So sick of this BS, and NDSU having to bail out UND and the state of north dakota for und's problems.

I hope Gene and Joe Chapman dont cave to the pressure of the PRO-UND Media in Fargo.. yes I said FARGO. its a shame.

Re: Und and ndsu ad's talking future schedules

NDSU President Joe Chapman said on the radio yesterday that NDSU and UND will likely play in football somewhere around 2012. It also sounds like the two schools are talking about playing in other sports starting this year or next.

All it took to get this done was a complete admin change up in GF. It sounded like Chapman and the new UND president have a very solid relationship and see a lot of things the same way.
