It doesn't sound like Centenary's future is in the Summit....

"The resolution (of the trustees) was to explore conference affiliations, including D-I conferences, and that's what makes sense for Centenary," Gilliam said. "It takes effort to get things done and we have some people looking at possible membership in D-I conferences in this part of the country."

Hopefully Douple can land Denver, I'm sure they would find being with the Dakota schools attractive, especially hockey rival UND.

Considering all the turmoil within the Big Sky I am also kind of worried about losing SUU.

I hate to say it, but with the addition of USD and UND down the road, IMHO, Cententary isn't going to be the only Conference mate to be looking elsewhere in the near future.

Douple's plan to have a solid "backbone" to the conference is a great idea...now, but what happens to the conference when some the "arms" and "legs" start falling off, such as ORU(MVC), Oakland(Horizon) SUU(Big Sky)??
Take your Blue/Yellow, Red/White, Green/Yellow, Green/White glasses off for a second and put yourself in the shoes of those AD's and Presidents. Hum, 8(Men/Women) trips to SD/ND, plus the conference tourney??

This backbone is great for SD and ND, but long-term...is it really??
I guess we'll see. Augie, St. Cloud State and Mankato State may have a home in Division I yet. WEEEE how exciting .

          Go Jacks!!

propar 80 makes some good points. However, I doubt that anything that the Summit League does will stop Oakland, SUU, and ORU from making those changes if they get invitations in the near future. Therefore, Mr Douple is probably correct as he seeks a conference with a backbone. There will always be teams seeking better conference affiliations and even more rumors of teams seeking better conference affiliations. The only real way to stop teams from looking for better situations outside of the conference is to become the conference that the good teams want to get in to. I think that is the long term goal of Mr. Douple and the member university presidents. Since the universities along the I-29 corridor in the Dakotas don't fit into the footprint of any other D-1 conference, they have every reason to be very selfish in strenthening the membership for a strong future for the Summit League. How to go about doing that is the real question.

I also think as the profile of the Summit improves there could be some good schools that want into the conference. I don't think the Horizon League fo example has much on the Summit!

I'll just say you add good schools when you can, UND and USD are good schools. If the conference can be spilt into two six team divisions travel is probably better than it was when there was just 10 teams.

As for Centenary they are a complete and total misfit in this league, they share basically no identity with league members and as a result have no rivals. That school and the league are probably better off without each other.

I know about the autobid and protecting it but at some point this league is going to need to be about schools that want to be here and not schools that are just using the league as a parking lot waiting for their next destination. I know schools will probably make moves like you mention, but a league that has a strong identity or core has much better chance of surviving than a league that is basically just there because there are no alternatives.

Douple did a take a big chance in forming this Dakota core but for the future the league it was something he had to do.
