  • Summit Team Nicknames

There is a link on The Summit League site which explains the origins of the nicknames of the athletic teams in the conference. It is interesting reading. If you haven't discovered it yet, go here:

It's really interesting to note how old our current mascots are compared to most of the Summit. You guys around 1905, Centenary around 1920, us between 1920-30, and UMKC just before 1940. Since then, it's been about one per decade with several new mascots in the last 15 years.

Certainly less stressful, as our friends up in Grand Forks would I suspect grudgingly admit.

            Re: Summit Team Nicknames

It would take some searching of the microfilm of The Brookings Register to find this particular little news story. I want to say it occurred about the mid 1950's when the big guy Dick Klawitter player for SDSU who played briefly for the Chicago Bears was playing. He was 6'6 and about 290 lbs and was huge for those days, and he did not have the enough quickness to sustain an NFL career. At any rate during the spring game, Dick and couple other players found a nest of baby rabbits on Old State Field, now Sexauer field either after or during the spring game. That usually does not happen every year. It made The Register Sports section with a photo that I vaguely recall. Just thought I would throw that in.

That's a large man even today!

Fun Fact: UND's mascot used to be the "Flickertails"

Maybe they should take that up again?

The U of M would probably sue them for encroaching on their varmint.

I'm sure we could all agree upon letting them just change the spelling to "Fighting Sue" instead of "Fighting Sioux."

Speaking of nicknames . . . having a bit of trouble stopping lately, are we?

                          Interesting stuff.

BTW, Wyoming has been the Cowboys since the early 1890s.
