Re: Will Summit tourney stay in Sioux Falls?

Looks like a good chance the tournament may stay in Sioux Falls for a while. I just don't see anyone topping the financial package they are offering:

I don't think there is any doubt Sioux Falls will get the nod for two more years (that's four total...not three). I talked to a member of the Oral Roberts board who said they were submitting a bid, but he wasn't for it as he thought it was a waste of time as their bid would be way below what Sioux Falls did and plans to do. He also indicated he came up for the tourney last year and thought it was just great...and he plans to come up again next spring.

Talk that Quad Cities would bid was just that, talk. They wouldn't have a chance. The only other Summit League schools with even close to the "draw" for Sioux Falls (with NDSU and SDSU just three hours apart, are Oral Roberts and Centenary (and I can tell you Centenary doesn't add anything to that option). NO place is going to draw as well as Sioux Falls or Fargo...and that will only get an exclamation point with the addition of USD and UND (likely...of course). IMHO as long as the money trail is there, I see the tournament possibly rotating between the two every two-year period at some point. (Fargo's only problem is that they would have to host it in the FargoDome not at the NDSU basketball site...but, of course, they can do that.)

there is still places that would consider hosting it...... Las Vegas? would a Casino think about bidding it? of course the league would have to approve it..... New Orleans? Kansas City? Omaha? I just think it depends on the economy and how desperate some of these venues are going to be for events and how bad some cities want these type of events..... I do think though that Sioux Falls is that 1 city where they could have it every year, the same people will show up every year..... Its just that type of a city.....

Why would they take the Summit Tournament to a destination where there is no fan base and everyone has to travel some distance? Sounds like a recipe to disaster to me. The players deserve to play in front of good sized crowds and it won't happen in any of the cities you have cited.

i'm not disagreeing but I think in the end it will be who offers the most money..... If a city with little to no fan base offers similar money they will take a deep look at them.....

BINGO! IMO, No way in heck do they put it in a non-Summit area. Let's be honest, if we throw "fairness" out the window and just worry about making money and what is best for the Summit, you put it in SF every year. Maybe give Fargo a shot, they would support it very well. Watch ESPN on Championship week. Wacth other lower tier conferences and see how many people are in the seats at their Championship games, then look what SF did last year. A no brainer. And if other Summit schools cry they need to look themselves in the mirror. As Colin says, "that's a you problem...."

The following is just my lowly opinion....The Vegas and New Orleans people could care less about Summit League basketball. With all the entertainment options in those places no way do people show up...or even hear about it for that matter. Kansas City has NCAA Regionals every year and they have the Jayhawks 20 minutes to the west. The fact that UMKC is there doesn't swing the pendelum much more in their favor. Omaha also has hosted and will continue to host NCAA Regional games and is home to a good MVC school and an hour from a Big XII school. Summit can't compete w/ those. Plus, it's only two hours from a detination (SF) that is the best spot for the tourney. Why play it just 2 hours from a place you know would support it?

Let's face it, outside our little worlds, the Summit is nothing. Most people couldn't name a single Summit team. The Summit is most popular in the Dakota's and that popularity is only going to continue to go up. It's all we have up here. We don't have other D1's or NBA teams to compete with. The future of the Summit is the Dakota's.....so we might as well keep it where people care about it.

I think you guys have missed JB's point. He was not saying there would be any attendance or fan support at those locations. He just said that if their bid guarantees more money to the conference than Sioux Falls or Fargo or where ever, the League would take a look at going there. I am not sure how much more money they would have to put up to get the event, but it would be looked at.

I understand his point I just don't think winning the bid is just about any destination thowing a bunch of money at the League and then have the teams play in a empty venue. The League has stated more than once that they are looking at the athlete experience as a major criteria. I also don't think a city will bid if there is no anticipated return on investment like Sioux Falls was able to achieve. Yes, the money has to be there, but there are other factors. As long as Sioux Falls has the corporate support and continues to bring out the attendence numbers exhibited this year they will be hard to beat. I think Grand Forks (Ralph Engelstad Arena) and Fargo (Fargo Dome) will also get in the mix.

Re: Will Summit tourney stay in Sioux Falls?

Money wins out.... if its close Sioux Falls will continue to win the bid but if its not they will loose it. I personally believe that short term nobody will be able to compete with Sioux Falls. But I also know a little about how arena's work. they want to book there venue as much as they can.... look at WWE and the Pepsi center.... The Summit League tournament will do best in Fargo and Sioux Falls however I think Sioux Falls would do a little better just because they have a basketball arena and its generally 10-15 degrees warmer in Sioux Falls then it is in Fargo in late February/Early March..... And I don't think that the tournament being on ESPN is the greatest thing for Sioux Falls keeping it.... because if it is on ESPN and some venues and corporate people see it doing good they'll be inclined to consider bidding on it and the facct that the game is on ESPN means that it is something....

Again I'm just playing devels advocate I personally believe that in Sioux Falls it will do the best both attendance wise and money wise but as a fan I wouldn't be convinced that it is going to be there forever. Sioux Falls had some problems..... most if not all the fact that they play in a small, old arena.... but again in the end I think its money that wins out....

Im so embarassed that FARGODOME won't even BID on the tourney.

its a crying shame, the facility that Fargodome is would be amazing with 8,000-10,000 people in there, and with the nightlife in town, shopping, restaurants!!

sioux falls felt like hitchcock south dakota to me.

Fargo at least provides 16,000 hot co'ed's. which sioux falls doesnt.

Oh please. So every student attending NDSU is "hot". C'mon man, I used to live up there. Like everywhere, you have your babes, but don't make Fargo North Dakota out to be Malibu. This past Friday I was out at a certain Sioux Falls sportsbar on Louise to watch a young band play and there were more fine females than you would know what to do with.

                                Fargo - Miami Beach

                                Ha!
