  • T Denny Donation to USD Indoor Track Facility

It sounds like there's a fair bit of fundraising to be done yet but T Denny Sanford has made a gift in the name of Bill and Jill Gassen for a new indoor track facility. There are no details yet on how much of this amount Gassen is contributing, if at all. Here at SDSU, T. Denny's donations in Dana J. Dykhouse's name were always tied to a contribution by DJD himself. Gassen's primary job, as CEO of Sanford Health, is to smooch TDS's butt and he must be doing a very good job of it.

For those of you keeping score, from what I can find through lazy searches, T Denny Sanford (not Premier, not Sanford Health) has given about $15 million to SDSU ($5,000,000 for the DykSAC and $10,000,000 to DJD; I believe DJD himself contributing $1.5 million to the DykSAC and $2.5 million to DJD Stadium).

T Denny has given or pledged $52.5 million to USD: $20 million to the now Sioux Falls based med school; $12.5 million to the law school, and now $20,000,000 to the track facility. I don't see that there's been any other donations to the athletic department.

Focusing solely on the athletic department gifts, one could argue that given the time value of money, the $12.5 million TDS has given to SDSU 15-20 years ago is actually more than the new $20 million gift to USD now. The academic side, however, is sorely slanted. I can't find the TDS has given anything to SDSU academics. DSU has been a recipient of TDS's largess as well.

Sanford Health itself of course provided $10,000,000 to the field. Compare and contrast the $20,000,000 given to USD for facilities initiatives, including the basketball arena. Again, there is a time value factor to those gifts, with the Field House donation coming earlier in time than the USD donation. And, as I understand it, the USD gift is paid out over 20 years.

We've done a tremendous job with our facilities but we are already falling behind. I doubt its on the admin radar, but essentially doubling the fieldhouse so that there is a dedicated indoor FB facility and dedicated track facility is a must, in my opinion. But when we're paying athletes now, I assume the focus is going to be on funding athlete payments rather than brick and mortar.

Sanford is reportedly funding academic scholarships via the Horatio Alger Endowment through at least 2028.

Part of a larger $30 million donation benefitting 7 SD schools, not just SDSU.

Right; I'm no Sanford fan, but it is an example of an "academic" donation

Sure, but I don't see a direct donation to SDSU academic programs or brick and mortar like TDS has made to USD and even DSU.
