Re: Mid-Con will announce name change on May 15

Personally, I like Pinnacle League, but Summit League is OK too. Must be getting to know to much about "Snookums" because my first thought was the second t also.

What about the Summit candy bar? Who remembers those?

My favorite Summit product is their India Pale Ale. The EPA is darn good, too. Much more expensive and less common in South Dakota than it was in MN, obviously. I'm craving an IPA right now.... I'll have to settle for Old Mil light.

I think the "Summit League" is better than the Mid-Con.

        IPFW lets out Mid-Con secret

        Jeff Kolpack, The Forum
        Published Friday, May 11, 2007

It appears Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne will begin its first season in the Mid-Continent Conference on double secret probation.

The school violated an unwritten law in conference membership: it let out a league secret.

A school advertisement in a Fort Wayne phone book listed the Mastodons as “Summit League Member 2007.” A Fort Wayne television station, which broke the story of the phone book snafu, said the “cat had already gotten out of the bag” at an IPFW athletic banquet that a new name was in the works.

That’s not a surprise. It was a major point of discussion at the annual league meetings during the conference basketball tournament.

Other names that were apparently being considered were Pinnacle and Great American.

The league will make it official next week. As for the specifics of a new logo and official confirmation, NDSU athletic director Gene Taylor would rather have his teeth pulled by pliers than talk about it.

“You have to get that from the league office,” he said. “We don’t have anything about any new potential league name.” . . . (read more)

The Summit is OK but it seems more appropriate for Big Sky schools than our schools. I associate summit with high mountains and peaks which the Big Sky Schools have. Our schools are all in pretty flat places.

The Mid-Majority has gotten on board with the new name change (saw this over on the ORU board):

Just listened to the live press conference on 910 radio during the Sportsshow. The Mid-Con will officially become The Summit League on June 1st. Go Jacks.

I think is logo will look good the the floor of Frost, much better then the old one..

I was just a minute to late.... and to answer the question
The logo itself was designed by Nina Schmidt, a graphic designer at South Dakota State University.

A toast to Nina Schmidt (with a Summit beer, of course!). Nice, very clean logo for the Summit League.

We're not even a full-fledged member yet, and we've already made a huge contribution to the conference!

                          Congratulations, Nina! Nice Job!

After the hideous rabbit, it's nice to see a decent logo. I wasn't in favor of a name change, but I was wrong.

No offense to the designer, but I don't like the logo. How many conference members are close to mountains?

How many ACC schools are actually on the Atlantic Coast?

How far east is Big East member Marquette? Louisville?

How many teams are in the Big Ten?

The logo is a symbol of what the conference wants to be, not where they are or want to be located.

Great job done by Nina and the folks at the conference office.

It is ANOTHER great day to be a Jackrabbit!!
