Re: South Dakota to host Mid-Con Tourney

A basically home-court crowd makes it ever so slightly more likely that an SDSU basketball team will make the NCAA basketball tournament in our first two years of eligibility. Right now it looks like the women are the more likely team, but two years is a long, long time in basketball.

                Summit League Championship to SF.

Looks like SF has won the bid to host the Summit League championship for 2009-2010. I hope that's the case and that this forces SF to make some major improvements to the Arena. Calls to the three groups fronting the bid – the Sioux Falls Sports Authority, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and South Dakota State – were not returned. A representative from the Summit League said that commissioner Tom Douple was out of the office for the day.

Sioux Falls and Tulsa, which will host the 16-team tournament at the 4-year-old, $22 million UMAC for the fourth year in a row in 2008, were the only options considered by the Summit League presidents at their annual meetings held Monday in Chicago. . . . (read more)

KELO and KSFY both report tonight at 10 pm news that an offical news conference is scheduled tomorrow to announce the selection of SF for 2009 and 2010. I think its a bird in the hand.

championships in 2009 and 2010 Commissioner Tom Douple announced Wednesday.

“We are very excited about having our basketball tournament in Sioux Falls,” Douple said. “It will be great for the city and the
region, and we anticipate tremendous support from the community. We are especially looking forward to bringing March Madness

Summit League commissioner Tom Douple announced at news conference this morning at the Convention and Visitors Bureau that Sioux Falls will host the NCAA Division I conference’s men’s and women’s basketball tournaments at the Arena from March 7-10, 2009 and March 6-9, 2010.

The event features 16 teams and 14 games. The men’s championship game is aired live on ESPN, the women’s final on ESPNU.

“This is March Madness and this is a ticket to the Big Dance,” Douple said. “It doesn’t get any bigger than that in college athletics. To be able to say your ticket has to come through Sioux Falls is very, very important and it gains a lot of respect when you’re trying to get other events in this area. You can host a ticket to the Big Dance, you can host anything.”  .  .  .  (read more)
