Valley City State University's upset bid came up just short Thursday night as the Viking women's basketball team played North Dakota State University tough for all 40 minutes but fell 85-77 in Fargo. Georgia Williams led the Vikings with 27 points and five assists in the exhibition loss, going 10-for-20 from the field and 5-for-10 on 3's. Sara Schwanke added 11 points on 5-for-11 shooting, and Courtney Magnuson chipped in 10 points. Hannah Schlecht added eight points off the bench, and both Courtney Dixon and Kaitlin Connor chipped in seven points while combining for 17 rebounds.
NDSU's Marena Whittle led all scorers with 32 points, including a 9-for-12 night at the free throw line. NDSU had a huge advantage at the free throw line as the Bision finished 21-for-32 on free throws, compared to 7-for-13 for the Vikings.
Valley City State shot 49 percent overall (32-65) and was 35 percent from 3-point range (6-17). NDSU shot 46 percent overall (29-63) and 46 percent on 3's (6-13). Box Score
After falling behind 14-7 in the first quarter, the Vikings ripped off a 20-4 run as they built their largest lead of the game at 27-18. The Vikings led 27-20 after the first quarter, but the Bison – an NCAA Division I team – stormed back with a 23-7 edge in the second quarter to take a 43-34 halftime lead.
VCSU was back within three points in the third quarter before the Bison opened up a 64-53 lead to end the third. NDSU led by as many as 13 points in the fourth quarter at 76-63. The Vikings chipped away and made it a game down the stretch, climbing back to within four points at 81-77, but could not complete the comeback.
The game was an exhibition contest for the Vikings and does not count towards their record.
The Yankton beat writer for USD tweeted that last night that USD came "up short in a chance to topple a major conference program". So I looked, outside of a win against Marquette (Big East, BSC?), USD have never beaten a school from one of the major conferences. In fact if you look back they have rarely played these type of games. That seems pretty crazy considering the number of major conference schools we have played, and beaten.
We need the upper level schools in the Summit (see USD) to begin playing a better OOC schedule. And when they have the opportunity they need to win these games. Time to step it up Yotes!!!

Im to the point anymore that when we play a team from the power five I almost expect a win. There are some exceptions, say Notre Dame, but for the most part I expect us to win.
It is unfortunately a situation where the bottom portion of our league is absolutely terrible. Omaha got rolled by a UND team who was minus their pre-season player of the year. Omaha and NDSU losing exhibition games with ORU needing overtime to avoid the same. USD without Seekamp is basically good shooters (not that you could tell that by the UNI game) who don't play any defense. The recruiting class that they are raving about had better be what they think it is or they are in a world of hurt next year. Had Seekamp not been granted another year they would probably be behind IUPUI and WIU this year.
Quite honestly with our team this year if we don't roll through the Summit League I will be very disappointed. We can give up on this being a league where we receive multiple bids until the rest of this league outside of USD seriously picks it up. IUPUI and WIU seem to be trending up, but can they sustain it? The rest of the league is so far from being good it's laughable.

Good asessment,i agree,we make our own way expecting little help from the rest of the Summit. W. Ill just about beat Iowa, but didn't show up in OT.They were up by three with 10 seconds left, who cares if they make a two point shot, put everyone on the perimeter and don't let them tie with making a three pointer for cripes sake. IPFW had a signature win a couple years ago over Mich St. but haven't done anything since. If you think about it,most of the other teams have lost more to graduation than they've gotten back. It's hard to recruit good players into a losing program, that's why we have to keep forging ahead, whether the rest of the league can keep pace or not.The AAC doesn't hold UConn back.....
I have been pleasantly surprised in the last week in a couple of the Summit teams. USD with Seekamp seems to be getting on a bit of a roll. They have a big game against Drake that should show them where they are really at. IUPUI really has a good group of athletes and could be dangerous. They really looked good in the 2nd half against a pretty solid Indiana State team. Overall they just really haven't played anyone and really only have games against a good Georgia Tech team and a surprisingly down Louisville team to really make a statement. They are IMO the most athletic team in the Summit League (and I don't think it's really that close).
I felt in the offseason Western Illinois would possibly challenge the top 2, but once Luke left they are most likely a 3-4 place team with IUPUI. Omaha has been better than expected and could be a threat to the middle tier of teams in the league. The best thing about watching them play is still their head coach though...
Outside of that, the rest of the league looks pretty bleak. ORU has been looking more like the old Finkbeiner teams with full court pressure and trapping defense. Teams have struggled to score against them as they appear to be fairly athletic. Unfortunately for them, I think Luper could outscore the entire roster they have right now. The rest of the league has been as bleak as expected. I give coach Paul credit, he is the best coach at putting positive spins on bad performances of any coach I have ever seen. Denver can occasionally shoot the ball, but are very weak overall. NDSU would likely finish near the bottom of the NSIC this year (as attested to by a loss to a 1-10 Minnesota Crookston team).
SDSU and USD should not lose to any of the other teams in the league this year. However, I expect that either IUPUI or Western will see a cold shooting night by one of the top two and knock on of them off (probably at home). A loss by the top tier against anyone below the 2nd tier is really unacceptable though.
WIU is a up and down team and not really consistent. If their 3 point shots are falling that night, watch out (like @Iowa).
Drake traveling to the D-Dome will be a good test for Seekamp and company. Other than the K-State game, the Yotes haven't been really tested with Seekamp. I looking to this game as well as when Washington visits Verm.
Remember last years loss at IUPUI was part of a back-to-back because of a winter storm and they lost on a last second shot. I'm not to worried about IUPUI or any other teams for that matter except for USD and WIU (when their shooting is on).
The Summit League lost a whole bunch of stars of their respective teams to graduation last year, who carried their teams much of the time.Western Illinois lost Luke, Bison lost Brooke LeMar, IPFW lost Siebert, ORU lost McKintyre (irreplaceable ?)IUPUI lost Markovic and USD just about lost Seekamp ,before fate intervened. Not sure they have anyone stepping up as consistent stars anyway, who they can lean on when things get rough.Omaha is consistently adding good players, they're young and should continue to improve. Our biggest concern will be complacency,if we become complacent and don't play good enough we can lose some games in the Summit, against the tier two teams anyway, anyone else and all the good as far as resume building will be flushed right down the drain.Ideally, we don't want to lose to any Summit teams unless they all can somehow raise their respective RPI's.USD has a chance to do that against Drake. The others might have noticable games left too, just haven't researched it yet.
