Re: Hard Pill to Swallow- Austin Hansen a Yote!!

Hansen has pursued head coaching jobs in the past. Well, one for sure. He was a finalist for the Bemidji State job a couple of years ago, while still at SDSU. That made public news.
    This space for lease.

Can anyone take off their Blue and Yellow glasses for two seconds and think of the scenario this way. New HC at USD needs someone with strong ties in the state, a proven recruiting record in the upper Midwest, and a quality coach. Reaches out to some contacts in his coaching circle for recommendations (maybe even one Scott Nagy, gasp!) and Austin Hansen becomes a logical choice for an assistant coach. And rather than "leaving" UNC, Austin was himself recruited away by someone sees value in his abilities and told him "Hey, come back to a quality mid-major conference and lets build a program". If I cared at all that's what I would think happened. But I don't, because its college athletics, coaches move all the time, and "Once a Rabbit, always a Rabbit" means little when a paycheck is on the line.

Got spread the rept pts, but this one deserved some, and not the red kind. Don't loose focus on who did the hiring. I believe it was a guy named Craig Smith, who knows the Dakotas. I think its time to put away the puking and vomiting talk.

Also added to the staff was a individual with a unique name and some one from Williston. Looks to be a good staff coming in at USD.

Here is what I think, Austin made the move away from SDSU because it was the best thing for he and his family. Assistant coaches have to make connections and contacts if they want the best chance to move up the coaching ranks and into a head coaching position. Sitting on the bench with Nagy for 10 years no knowing if he would get the head coaching job at SDSU was not an option. Nagy leaves and Austin is stuck if he doesn't get the HC position. No way SDSU could promise him anything. If the people I spoke with at the time he chose to move on were being honest he was encouraged to leave.

Now, did those encouraging him to move on anticipate that he would end up at USD? I highly doubt that. That doesn't change for one moment the fact that the move away from SDSU was not on the basis of disagreement or conflict. There is no evidence to suggest that Nagy pushed him out or that Austin left on bad terms. Getting exposure to the Big Sky region and another group of coaches when recruiting and competing is exactly why he moved on.

I don't know the reason for the move from UNC to USD. I can only speculate. One can assume that getting back closer to "home" is the primary motivator. In addition I suspect compensation is similar and I suspect the clincher was Coach Smith and his personality. He must have really impressed Austin while recruiting him during the Final Four.

I'll take it a step further and say that Austin now has the opportunity to associate himself with the Tim Miles coaching tree. Scott Nagy has had an impressive career at South Dakota State. Tim Mile's career is on a totally different trajectory. Not sure I'm making sense. I can confirm that he his a great person that deserves only the best.

Re: Hard Pill to Swallow- Austin Hansen a Yote!!

I see this move 2 ways. Even though its a horizontal move at best, if not down somewhat because of USD struggles being D-1. The move works for him if USD becomes a good program and competes for summit tittles. that puts him in a postition to move on to be a HC from either midmajor or lower programs, or D-2 schools if he wanted to go that route. On the other hand, Leaving SDSU to gain experience and his contacts, if SDSU stays at the top of the summit, and USD struggles continue, then does going to different programs really help him? Not many schools are going to consider an assistant if he is at a school for 4-5 years and rarely have a winning record. So its hard to say if this is a good move for him right now. In 5 years we will be able to judge if it was worth it.

My thoughts are about going to a rival, are similar to SF with Avera and Sanford. Some are very passionate to one side, even if they respect the other organization, many people who grew up here and or work for one system, would have a very hard time going to the other. Not that they think they are bad or such, just that it wouldnt "feel" right working at the other health system. I know many who have switched with out a second thought, and others who you couldnt pay enough to work for the other. I guess thats how I see SDSU and USD when it comes to working for them. Some wouldnt have a second thought, others would probably consider augie, or USF or other schools to go to before their main competitor. Neither view I feel is right or wrong, but thats just the way it is.

I really wish he wasn't coaching at USD, because I don't like cheering for USD.

Good post Goon. I think that about sums it up. Some won't think twice about working for a rival sports club, other's wouldn't be caught dead doing it - regardless of the situation. I would never have made the decision to go coach for a rival, but to each his own.

Looking back on what I've previously posted, I'm changing my tune a bit. Austin appears to have bigger goals than what some of us might think and perhaps Nagy told him that he wasn't going to reach those goals if he continued to stay in his comfort zone and hang around SDSU. Hopefully USD is only a temporary stop for him. Unfortunately if that is going to be the case, USD will likely need to have some successful years (including against the Jacks) for that to happen.

Let's not kid ourselves either. This hire will hurt SDSU basketball in one way or another. Local recruiting just got a whole lot tougher.

Agree, Jackrabbits are going to have to step up their game. I don't look at it as hurting as much as I do a challenge for Nagy and his staff to stay ahead of the rest of the Summit and keep getting better. Several new buildings and facilities coming on line for several programs. No time for an complacency at SDSU and everybody knows that. I'm not wasting anytime worrying about other programs, I'll invest my energy in supporting the Jackrabbits.

Austin Hansen needs to do what is best for his family, not worrying about a fan base caring about him going to a once rival school. I can't believe any jacks fans even care that he went to USD to coach. It is not like he is still playing and transferred there to play. Once you are a coach, I would imagine rivals mostly go out the door once you become a professional and you have to worry not only about yourself but what is best for your family.

Re: Hard Pill to Swallow- Austin Hansen a Yote!!

I'm going to quit poking fun and attempting to lighten things up because I can't stand the thought of one more person giving me negative reps ( ok, that was sarcastic, but now I'm done).

Some of you are blasting Austin for taking a job with the Coyotes, but most of you see it for what it is, and that is a move to hopefully better his professional career. Many people might have difficulty "switching sides" while others could care less. If Austin feels like this is a good career choice at this point in his life, then so be it. USD is going to make every attempt to compete and succeed both in the Summit and the MVC. If this new basketball coach turns out to be a good selection, and adding Austin to the team is going to enhance his chances of succeeding, then by all means, it's a win-Zwingli for all parties involved. His tweet even says he bleeds blue and gold, but USD has great people as well. Is that surprising? After all, it is in the state of South Dakota.

JackMd I think sums it up best. He's not going to spend any energy worrying about other teams, but focus his efforts, time, and talents on helping SDSU be the best, just as I am in USD being the best. If we hire a former player of yours and it makes us better, then so be it. The jury is still out of this new team of coaches can get it done or not. On paper, it appears they might. Having success in basketball is not new to USD. The history the past 25 years gives indication it has been done before, therefore can be done again. If Coach Smith is the man, good for us, time will tell. If Austin is as good as many of you say he is, and we have success, you'd be fools not to look at him to replace Nagy someday.

For those of you that don't think you can cross color lines without conscience, take a good look at Dave Gottsleben. He's a graduate of your fine school, but has built a power at USD. I know many times he's been offered an opportunity to resurrect your program, but has graciously declined, because he loves USD, and is a Coyote.

In closing, I won't poke as much fun at situations on here as I would normally because there are a couple of you for sure that get pissed off and then hand out negative rep points. And also send less than friendly personal messages. But I will always want to debate sports on here because most of you enjoy the banter and debate and bring a it of good view points to the table.

I maybe should've worded my post better rather than the knee-jerk reaction I had. I certainly do wish Austin all the best. He's a good guy.

I also stand by my point that I don't really have an interest in having him back here. That's just me. My opinion doesn't matter at all.

We can all say that we are happy for Austin to get the job and mean it but aren't most of you going to have some sort of regurgitating event happen when they announce him as coach? Not a long-lasting feeling but more of a short-lived gastrointestinal situation when you here the statement, "Please welcome the newest member of the Coyote Family, Assistant Coach Austin Hansen." I know I will.
