  • ORU Announces Return to Summit League

TULSA, Okla.-Oral Roberts University will return to The Summit League in all sports, beginning July 1, 2014, it was announced on Thursday.
With the announcement, ORU returns to a league where it spent 15 seasons, leaving the Southland Conference after two seasons of competition. All 16 sports sponsored by ORU will compete in The Summit League.
“We are excited to have Oral Roberts University join The Summit League for the 2014-15 season,” said Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple. “ORU brings very strong and well-rounded athletics and academics programs to our league.”
“We are appreciative of our time in the Southland Conference and enjoy our friendships and competition with its outstanding member institutions,” said ORU Director of Athletics Mike Carter. “When the Southland Conference expanded to 14 teams, some of our primary objectives in joining the Southland, such as improving travel costs and developing rivalries with selected schools, are no longer possible to achieve. With these changes in circumstances, we believe that returning to The Summit League is in the best interest of our programs and student-athletes. We look forward to returning to The Summit League and renewing the rivalries we developed there during our 15 year membership.”
In just over one full year of competition in the Southland Conference, the Golden Eagles recorded one regular season and one tournament championship, had eight individual conference champions, 42 all-conference selections, five players of the year and two freshmen/newcomers of the year.
During its time in the Mid-Con/Summit League, ORU won nine commissioner’s cups, 49 regular season and 91 tournament championships.

Wow. This is great for the Summit League.

The Southland conference got too big with 14 teams and they couldn't save money on travel or develop rivalries, according to the AD.

Huge get for the SL. Not only is this great for basketball, but for baseball as well.

Denver, Tulsa (ORU) as travel partners, UNO/USD, NDSU/SDSU, WIU, IPFW/IUPUI. Still hope that UNC, UND and EIU consider moving into Summit/MVFC. This may also be the doorway for UALR (a non-football school) exits out of the Sunbelt. IIRC, they may be the ONLY non-football school left in the Sunbelt.

Its interesting, could there be more to this? It just seems odd that ORU would choose now to move back. We know Oakland is not coming back but it almost seems like there is more to this.

This was all an elaborate plan orchestrated by Douple to get UMKC out of the league.

ORU coming back the Summit is a good deal, UMKC, however, not so much.

I think the Summit caught a break when UMKC left for the WAC, and hopefully they don't screw it up.

I never said I wanted the Roos back...just saying they aren't looking very bright right now.

With that said I would really like to bring in a 10th member. It would be nice to give either ORU or WIU or Denver a nearby travel partner.

Oral Roberts and the summit league were in a committed relationship; then ORU thought they could do better so they broke up with us. Now after a short time they realized what a huge mistake they'd made, and now they come running back, begging us to take them back. And we do, with open arms. Now that's love.

I don't think there was any begging going on here. The Summit should be damn happy to have Oral back in the conference. OR will strengthen the Summit in every sport they participate in.

Really no surprise they are back. I hear it some talk of it way back last March at the Summit League ournament. There was discussion that Oral had made a call to Douple and asked if the Summit would take them back if they made an official request? Thank god they did.

Welcome back Oral Roberts and Go Jacks

Now we have a team that will be a pleasure to beat. ORU will continue to have competitive teams in a number of sports It was a bunch of fun cheering their last loss in the Summit Tourney for both the men and women. It also helps the conference significantly.. Go Jacks!!
