    Re: Denver to Summit?

I just looked at the attendance figures for a couple of women's basketball games in Denver. Their two home games this year drew crowds of 266 and 532. Are there enought SDSU alumni in the Denver area to outnumber the home team fans in their arena?

Men's basketball is one of their big interests there.. I remember they played in the same region for the DII as the Jacks when Frost hosted games. A weekend road trip would double the women games attendance in Denver. You may pay $5 for courtside seats there. Some of the Summit schools have a very inexpensive way to most women games and some men's games.(DU tickets for men's courtside $270 for 15 games. DU tickets for women courtside $126 for 14 games.)

Lot of unrealistic and uninformed people on those blogs. Especially that guy who says that the Summit is a step down from the WAC.

It seems a lot of them are focused on hockey - so it's not that they are so unrealistic or uninformed - it's that they've taken a few too many pucks to the head. (especially the UND fans that were piping in with their two cents.) I was one who had hoped we would consider D1 hockey at one point, but I would rather deal with the unrealistic Bizun faithful (MOST of their fans are great people - it's the fringe in any circle that taint your perception of them ALL) than Sioux hockey fans.

I think this is a great thing to be planning ahead (proactive) rather an reacting to a loss of a school or two (reactive).

I saw that everyone's favorite Bison fan showed up almost immediately, and it's like, 'wow, could you be a worse ambassador for this conference?' Certain NDSU and UND fans need to realize that the rest of the world has little interest in their feud.

And the DU fans who think that the Summit is worse than what they deserve are just out of touch with reality. They're not attractive to the Valley, probably never will be. The WCC doesn't want them for some reason--probably the travel--and so where are you at? Big Sky or Summit. That's where.

Then there's all the noise they make about how their budget is huge. Yeah, well, they sponsor men's and women's lacrosse, men's hockey, men's and women's skiing, and women's gymnastics. They've got a respectable budget for basketball, but they've not done as much with it as SDSU has done with its budget.

            --

Further, I don't think the Summit is being proactive here. If ORU were still in the Summit, they wouldn't be interested in Denver.

a robust conference values educational excellence as well as athletic achievement
This quote from the DU chancellor is an obvious jab at the WAC.

Correction to earlier entry. The Metro team was here in DII and SDSU played Denver in transition period. Either way, I hope we can make the road trips to Brookings a defeat on more than a regular basis.

The Summit is a stepping stone for greater things, laugher,I hope they can compete is more like it.Most of their posters are arrogant, conceited and have an over-inflated opinion of themselves(pompous a$$*$'$) is my first impression, even worse than ORU was.

I agree with what Terry said on twitter, saying its not as big of deal as some are making it, it's a move to help the conference and its a good move to make looking at the options out there. Denver has a solid men's basketball program, solid facilities, great academics, and is in a metro-area where travel is easy. (my brother flew from Sioux Falls to Denver over Thanksgiving Break, for $350 round trip, in first class). Regular weekends would be about half price.

Its not a move to get into a new big media market, or to possible host a tournament someday, or to get into a recruiting area. Its a move to add a solid school, that fits geographically, academically and financially to the conference, and its a good move in my opinion.

The only knock I would have against this, is that it makes the Summit League a three time-zone conference once again. Then again, I can see some of the Jackrabbit fans out in Rapid City making the trips to Denver to cheer on the Jacks.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Denver has a fair amount of SDSU alums, as well as USD, NDSU and UNO.

As far as the time-zone, is that as big of deal if the conference is not going to have double headers? Travel is much easier compared to SUU, and the only other issue I had with the 3 time zones was it seemed to get late for some teams, but if your not playing double headers I don't think its as big of a problem.

                            Re: Denver to Summit?

The DU Pioneers spend more $$ than most of the Summit teams do on MBB. Much like Oral Roberts before them, they will try to spend their way to a conference title. Most years, ORU was part of the equation and a top half seed, but it didn't lead to a substantial lead in the # of conference titles. And how many times was DU's name called out during March Madness? I don't recall a single time. IMHO, while Denver is a good addition for the sports that they bring, they are missing many (T&F?, baseball, football) that matter to Rabbit fans. Doubt they will be competitive for the all around trophy as they will be missing several sports that are tracked. My $0.02

I think DU has a lot of potential I think being in the Summit will help them. I'd imagine it was hard for a school way out in Denver to recruit in Sun Belt areas but they might have some success in IN, IL, NE, MO, MI, ND, SD and MN.
