  • Denver to Summit?

It appears there is a chance that the University of Denver is bound for the Summit League according to some chatter on Twitter. An interesting expansion for the Summit if true. May or may not be good to expand to another major market area.

Hopefully the summit is being proactive and bringing in a team before we lose one and hopefully there is reason Denver would be it. With all the changes going from confrence to confrence its impossible to know what is and isnt a good fit and deal for a school.

Won't all teams from now on be joining the Big East or the B1G30?

Gonna be 4 to 6 large "power" conferences that are going to try and form their own post-season tourney for BB just like they do in FB. I've been hearing about it for 2 years now and I expect it to happen eventually. These large conferences want to keep the money at play and allowing smaller conferences bids to the bid dance dilutes profits. I know their are a lot of those that doubt this change is coming but I think it is. There will essentially be a FCS division in basketball.

Great travel partner for UMKC. Will be an easy flight for just about everyone in the Summit.

Too many people love Cinderella for that to happen IMHO

The power conference to 16 push is entirely about football and maintaining complete control over how it is run and where the money flows. There is no money in destroying the big dance, in fact the power schools would probably lose money if they formed their own tournament. Plus there would be a political fire storm that no president would want to deal with since a number of mid-major schools would be dealt a serious blow.

The greed is large at the big schools. They may kill the golden goose to push out the smaller schools.

                    Re: Denver to Summit?

Its a game of musical chairs with the top programs, yet to see anyone really move up, some will say UCONN, but they had a good thing to get into for football. (at the time they moved up)

I like the move, I've been talking up Denver for a while, would have worked better with Oral Roberts as a travel partner if they had not left. Denver has one of the best airports in terms of flights so travel is not a huge problem. They are a school similarly funded, similar facilities, and are a really good academic school. I still wonder if Northern Colorado won't find their way into the Summit, either as the football replacement in the Valley if someone leaves or if they drop football, and join.

In terms of options of expansion for basketball, I don't know if there is too much better they can get.

                      Re: Denver to Summit?

Sounds like Oakland is interested in the Horizon League now that they have an opening with Butler leaving. ESPN has a story on that. IUPUI also has interest, though there is only one spot just now. Sorry I don't have a link right off.

I think Oakland is gone if they get the invite. I have a hard time seeing IUPUI getting one.

Is this something new, or that same story from May? Because if it is, it has already been discussed and it appears that Detroit has all but blocked OU from any move to the Horizon.

Oakland has always been interested in the Horizon and would never have turned down an invite. The Horizon would be a bus league for Oakland. They wouldn't have to fly to a single school in the league.

Detroit doesn't want to let Oakland in and all reports are they will block any invitation. IUPUI doesn't have the facilities required, or a baseball team. I'm sure both teams would leave if they were invited, but the invite isn't as easy is some assume.
