    Re: Sanford to USD: $20M

I believe the scoreboard in the original drawing was limited to 2 digits and even though the score looked like USD 12 & SDSU 68, the actual score was 112 - 68.

I am guessing the person that did the original drawing has some ties to SDSU and inserted the score as a subtle jab. I do know that the SDSU architecture students did take a trip to visit the offices of the firm drew up the plans for USD. My nephew is a student at SDSU and told me sometime ago that he had seen the plans on the trip. If it was intended as a prank, then I must say, well done.

Actually, I would think that would be a pretty good way to get yourself fired . . .

Sanford’s donation would cover about 40 percent of the estimated $50 million price tag for a 6,000-seat arena and connecting building

but Mick quotes David Sayler USD's Ad who says -

“The gift from Sanford is not just for the arena and it will not just benefit the athletic department,” Sayler said.

If some of the gift is "to support student scholarships and university faculty" as it states in USD's press release then it can not be used for the arena and the many many other projects that have been mentioned in the last two days so they are not providing 40% of the cost.

Are any of the dollars in the gift earmarked for the Sanford Medical School? If so were they already promised and announced? Just curious.

Here is the laundry list of things that USD says they are going to use the money for:
        1. Basketball Arena
        2. A “connecting” building – a facility attaching the arena to the DakotaDome that would house offices, a weightroom, locker rooms and physical therapy venues
        3. Outdoor track & field complex
        4. Outdoor soccer complex
        5. Football practice facilities
        6. Basketball practice facilites
        7. DakotaDome renovations
        8. Student Scholarships
        9. Faculty support
        10. Class rooms

Seems to me that USD must be counting that $20 million over and over again if they think they can get all this done or they are downplaying the amount of dollars they still need to raise from their alumni. They claim they have $9 million - oh and some of that money is also been earmarked according to the Argus we just don't know how much and to what - in the bank from alumni and friends. So they have $29 million to do all these things. If the arena and connecting building are $50 million how much do the other 8 projects cost? I would like to know the breakdown of the Sanford gift because you can't give their arena/connecting building $20 million, and still have dollars to give to the other 8 projects that have been listed in the last two days.
This article says the total project cost is 70 million. It mentions your items 1-7 but it's unclear if it includes 7-10.

Does the fact that it's $1 million/year for 20 years, rather than one lump sum, affect how the dollars are accounted for and allocated?

Thanks good to have more details. This story may have added items 11 and 12

              11 University’s health services program
              12 Support for
USD’s Kinesiology and Sports Science Department

Rumors that I am hearing out of V-town is that USD got $10 million for athletics, just like NDSU and SDSU and that the other $10 million is for other non athletic stuff already committed to, Sounds like USD was just trying to make a bigger splash by combining the gifts in their press release.

Wouldn't be the first person to risk his job for school pride. Here is a story of a Virginia Tech grad who designed a building on the University of Virginia campus from VT Magazine:

No matter how the Tech-UVa. game turns out, some Hokies will feel their alma mater is one up on the Cavaliers. After all, a Hokie made the VT logo a part of the University of Virginia landscape.

Back in 1982, Mark Lindsey (architecture '82) was fresh out of Virginia Tech and working at the prestigious Richmond architectural firm of Baskervill and Son on a new locker room/dining room next to the football stadium at the University of Virginia.

"We had done several designs," says Lindsey, now a partner with Baskervill. "They didn't like any of them."

The architects sat around brainstorming and Lindsey threw in an idea. "There was a V-shaped opening at the end of the stadium. And I had a late-night inspiration that the best thing to put in this V-shaped opening was a T." As in VT. As in Virginia Tech.

So he drew a T-shaped building." My biggest fear during the whole thing was that they were going to see the 'T,'" Lindsey told Ray McAllister at the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

But UVa. officials didn't; in fact, they picked it and Bryant Hall opened for the 1985 season. Although UVa. officials never noticed it until the VT was pointed out, it is clearly visible from the air. But not for long. As part of a $50 million stadium expansion, the university will replace Bryant Hall by the 1999 season.

"It's been a great little story to tell at parties," Lindsey says.

                    What we know:

USD has $70 million in building projects.
                    Sanford gave them $20million
                    They've also raised $9million
                    Unknown:

Don't know how much of the $20mil is going towards building projects.
                    Conclusion:

USD still has a buttload of money to raise.

If I am reading correctly, the donation was $20 million over 20 years? Was the SDSU donation a lump sum? The details on this USD donation are a little sketchy.

I liked the pictures and everything that they showed in the Argus. It is much needed down there. They are way, way behind in facilities (and SDSU has a long way to go) so this is a logical starting point.

From a Jackrabbit standpoint, I'm happy that our days in the Dakota Dump are numbered for basketball. It is terrible for basketball. Plus, I can see our shooters faring much better in a traditional gym setting than in the World's Largest Septic Tank. Sorry for the smackish stuff, but even you Yoties have to agree it is awful for basketball. It's always been a difficult place to play because of the crowd and atmosphere but add in the openness of the dome and it is awful. My prediction is the Jacks winning percentage vs. Yotes only goes up in the new place.

I think the interior renditions of the basketball arena look good, but the exterior drawing of the entire facility makes it look completely cobbled together. The mere fact they've referred to the middle structure as the connector building connotes cobbled to me. Or maybe it's just that big, ugly dome on the right that ruins the whole thing for me.

I believe the proper word for the connector building is breezeway.

I think its interesting there is no overhead scoreboard (don't particularly like that). Maybe there are plans to add one?

It is also interesting that there appear to be luxury suites 4 rows back on one side of the court. I don't think I've seen that before, pretty neat idea.

This will be a tough venue for opponents to win in, especially SDSU. It will be loud when full.

Good for the U. They need a basketball facility.

Volleyball? Can't have an overhead scoreboard if the facility has a lower roof and is going to double for VB.
