Summit Academics

USD had the greatest number (65) of top academic athletes in the Summit, closely followed by SDSU (62). Short note in the Argus here:

Both schools deserve a pat on the back for the academic performance.

SDSU continues its string of top academic performances by athletes since moving to D-1. It says a lot about South Dakota higher education when USD is at the top too.

It would seem since USD doesn't offer baseball or wrestling, their 1st place finish is even more impressive. Good job USD.

Wrestling didn't hurt them because this was a Summit list and the Summit doesn't sponsor wrestling. Baseball hurt them a bit, though, as did men's tennis.

For spring, SDSU finished ahead of USD and just behind Oakland in "All-League" awards (3.0 minimum vs. 3.6):

For the full year, SDSU had 202 (154+48) "All-League" recipients (3.0+) and 87 (62+25) "Distinguished Scholar" (3.6+). USD had 186 (139+47) "All-League" and 89 (65+24) "Distinguished Scholar".

Oakland had 156+62, or 218 "All League" due in part to sponsoring men's soccer in the fall season.

(BTW: all numbers are winter/spring + fall)

For the full year, USD led all Summit teams in "Distinguished Scholar" awards, as Oakland had 25 "Distinguished Scholar" awards in fall, which was only one more than USD's award total.

I changed the name of this thread to "Summit Academics". The story link provided by Zooropa provides more stats than the original Argus story linked in the first post in this thread.
