Will Scott Sutton stay at ORU?

Some speculation about a move with Tulsa, Mississippi State and Nebraska being discussed...according to this article:

A great time for Sutton to move on. Outstanding year, winning record, moving to a less competitive conference. A senior laden team with several key personnel moving on. What's to keep Sutton in a backwater conference team if a BCS conference comes courting with associated higher $$ paycheck, and opportunity to make the dance?

Over on the ORU fan board, they seem almost resigned to the possibility of Sutton leaving - their only fear is that he would go across town to Tulsa. If he does go to a major school,it will be interesting if a BCS school will allow him to bring his brother Sean, and all his OK State baggage along with him. Wonder if ORU would be interested in Sean ?

There are rumblings from Kansas State that Frank Martin might be looking (specifically, at South Carolina) as well.

Not trying to start rhubard here, but correct me, was not brother Sean arrested for DUI and that has been a while back. I would suspect that he has righted the ship with the DMV of Oklahoma by now and there should not be any more problems unless he been hitting the sauce since that time. Was there more to it in terms of baggage? Recruiting no-no's?

Good luck to Scott, the future looks bright for him.

There were no NCAA problems for Sean, only personal ones. I believe it involved painkillers or some other prescription drugs if I remember correctly.

Thanks. If Richard Roberts took a chance on him, and nothing bad happened, I would think Sean deserves a second chance. Being in a recovery group for many years, I tend to believe in second chances.

This is a good year for Scott to move on for the reasons noted previously in this thread. The ideal time to leave would have been after his run with Tutt and Green when he turned down Wichita State and TCU.

Sean would be a good bet to get the job if Scott leaves. To be clear, Richard Roberts did not "take a chance on Sean." Roberts was forced to resign in 2007 and is no longer affiliated with ORU in an manner (THANK GOD). The ORU AD is long time friends with the Suttons and along with the current President agreed to bring Sean in to assist with his recovery and entry back into college basketball.

Thanks JJ for correction. I was aware of Richard stepping down, but I do recall he made a campus visit to NDSU to consider NDSU for membership in the now Summit League. That might have been in 2006. Seems like he was impressed with the Campus. I believe one of the sons of David Green, of Hobby Lobby has had a big hand getting ORU back on track. Also I understand the athletic department has had a certain amount of automony for a long time.

                    Re: Will ORU keep Sutton?

The AP is reporting that Scott Sutton is/is planning on interviewing with Nebraska. I thought both Scott and Sean were good coaches, and were just waiting to get out of ORU. Will be interesting to see if Sean would be offered, or even want to take over the ORU job if Scott leaves, or if he would want to follow Scott.

Sounds like Scott will only interview for a Power 6 conference job. (won't leave ORU for another mid-major) Local Tulsa media expects that if Sutton was to leave, Norm Roberts, (assistant at Florida, former hc at St. Johns) to be #1 target. he makes over $200K as an assistant at Florida, and got a $23K bonus for making the tournament

The Omaha and Lincoln papers are also reporting that Colorado St. HC (former NDSU HC) Tim Miles has either interviewed or is planning on interviewing for the Nebraska job as well.

Sean was arrested for trying to get prescription drugs, under a fake name, across state lines. There Dad (Eddie) was arrested for the DUI with alcohol and painkillers.

But prior to Sean getting arrested, he had been to rehab.

appears Tim Miles will be named the next coach at Nebraska later today.
