  • Season Comparative Stats from ESPN.com

ESPN.com maintains running stats for all DI teams including the following per-game averages: points; rebounds; assists and field goal shooting percentage. Below each season average is the ranking compared to all of DI. One perhaps cannot reach very precise conclusions from the stats but in very general terms, they are somewhat instructive. [Example: field goal shooting percentage would have more meaning if we knew the number of attempts; example: some defensive stats like points allowed would give more meaning – I suppose I could have calculated that but what the heck, I’m just copying stuff while watching the Michigan football game and I don’t want this to be work!]

In particular circumstances, season-long stats may be less instructive than, for example, the more recent two or three games (take Oakland – early season stats may tell us more than stats from the last three games… the Griz seem to be in a freshman slump but I’m convinced Coach Kampe has a good chance of coaching them out of it by the end of the season).

If you think season-long stats are meaningful, then be impressed by both NDSU and SDSU.

Here are those ESPN stats for the Summit League teams through tonight’s (Jan 3, 2012) games. Reading across are Points, Rebounds, Assists and Field Goal %. Below each number is the national (DI) comparative rank for each stat.

Too bad they didn't include strength of schedule . . .

I think the average number of points scored and strength of schedule are important indicators and in that regard, SDSU is above NDSU.

Now, nflbison, watch your step. Many (including reputable posters on Bisonville) are convinced you're lakesbison. If by some small chance you're not, then you have my apology--I realize that saying one is lakebison is a terrible insult.

            I prefer

            NDSU 127.996
            SDSU 130.49

When you add them all up.

            Either way, we outscored you.
