  • Keith Benson waived by Hawks

I saw in the transactions section of the Argus Leader that Keith Benson was waived by the Atlanta Hawks.

I don't know enough about how that works but by being waived they are giving others a chance to pick up his contract and be compensated for doing so or are they cutting ties completely?

Wow. The fact that he was commonly referred to as a "potential NBA lottery pick" throughout the entire season last year makes you wonder how much we really know about judging NBA potential around here. He turned out to be a second rounder that was waived only a few days after the season started. Hopefully he'll land somewhere and put together a career.

I am pretty sure in the NBA, the team that waives you is cutting all ties.

Meh. I wasn't that impressed with him last year. Good defender, but from the 3 times I saw him, he just sagged into the lane a lot. In the SL tourney, OU had Hudsen guard Dykstra. Not a knock on him, but I thought he was overrated.

If anyone watched Oakland's game against Texas last year, he looked terrible.

Check out the game thread for the Oakland v. Texas game last year. I think we were all pretty down on Benson's NBA prospects after that one.

          Thread here.

I know he is a great player for the SL but he is going to get eaten alive in the NBA.

I'm stuck at work and could not watch the game myself (glad to have satellite radio), so I have to rely on the commentators opinions. That being said, I think the possible projections of Benson as a lottery pick are probably a little high.

It's never a good sign when you have to sub out your 6'11" NBA prospect center because he is a liability on D.

I think maybe he'da been better off (NBA wise) if OU didn't make the tournament.

Re: Keith Benson waived by Hawks

The knock on Benson was always whether he was too soft for the NBA. The Texas game did nothing to alleviate these concerns, and probably only reinforced them.

He could get away with not being overly physical in the Summit League because he had tangible gifts that his opponents did not possess, but in the NBA he doesn't have that advantage.

That said, I feel he still has the talent to play in the NBA and hope he can develop the intangibles (and maybe put on some more weight) to make a roster in the future.

If no other team claims him,Atlanta still pays him the entire amount due over the length of his contract, unlike the NFL where a team is off the hook if they cut a player.

I believe that only applies to 1st round pick players. Players picked in the 2nd round have no guaranteed contracts.

2nd round contracts are not guaranteed meaning that they can cut ties before the season starts and own them nothing. I do believe though that once the initial contract is signed it is then completely owed.

In the NBA 1st rounds are slotted and guaranteed its really confusing.

As far as NBA talent, the NBA is so confusing, there are so many lottery picks from the last 5-10 years either out of the NBA or on the end of the bench somewhere. Every year there is an un-drafted fa that becomes a star. With basketball its all about fit. I'm a little surprised though that he didn't last longer, or that they didn't send him down to the D-league or something.

It looks like the only way Benson was going to sign w/ Atlanta was if it was a guaranteed contract and the fact he wasn't going to sign if he was going to be assigned to the D-League.
