  • Oakland hosts Tennessee

Oakland went to Knoxville and beat Bruce Pearl's Tennessee last year....tonight on ESPN-U, Tennessee is at Oakland. Looks like a full house (one group of Oakland students sitting behind Tennessee's bench, all clad (?) in Speedos and nothing else.

Tennessee is now coached by Cuonzo Martin.

Oakland starting fast...up 7-4 two and a half minutes in.

Oakland 11, TN 7 with 15:30 to go.

I think Oakland looks very good. They're fast and athletic. OU's Travis Bader is hot (and more than a little cocky).

    Kampe has dropped weight.

        Keith Benson who?

But seriously, Reggie was the best player on that team last year and the best player on the team this year (obviously).

In other conference news, USD outlasts a scrappy Tabor team 69-63. Tabor(NAIA) is now 3-6. It was 64-63 with 1:18 left to play.

Dave Boots got his 600th win. Congrats to Dave.

Oakland has this one wrapped up. It's good for the Summit.

              Oakland 89, Tennessee 81

Oakland really impressed tonight. I watched the entire game, thinking the whole time: how is anybody in the Summit gonna hang with these guys?

Defense my SDSU friends, you gotta bring the D vs the Grizzlies. Tennessee didn't bring it defensively and Oakland flat out wanted it more.....they out rebounded the Vols by 11.

But yes Oakland is my new favorite to win the league until I see otherwise.

They also shot a ton of free throws (even before TN started fouling late) and hit a very high percentage of them.

                    Re: Oakland hosts Tennessee

Great win for Oakland and the Summit League, but after watching 3/4ths of the game I didn't walk away feeling that the top teams in the conference couldn't compete with Oakland.

Oakland's defense at times looked very porous (especially in that zone), but they shot well from the perimeter and the free throw line, and that's why they won the game. As FargoBison said, play some defense against Oakland and have a decent offensive effort and I think SDSU/NDSU/Oral Roberts will have a fair shot at beating them.

                    Some very exciting basketball ahead.

take note SDSU fans and students. I know it was against Tenn but the stands were full, the ORena fits 3000 and they had 3800 in the place. the students all stand during the game. all the games. and know how to cheer. (all the kids in speedos were the mens and womens swimming team) the pool is in a basement area below the stands that the cameras were looking at the student section, benches and officials and it seems their in there 24 hours a day.

Don't want to turn this into a USD thread, so I'm only going to respond to this post and leave it at that.

First, Congrats to Dave. He is an excellent head coach.

Second, yikes. I am friends with some people with very close ties to this team and they realize that this year is going to be a struggle. Realized if after the UNO game. I hope USD can stay out of the Summit cellar, but I don't think there's any way they compete closely with the top half. We should smoke them this year.

I think our mens team will do fine against them. Its our womens team I am worried about losing to them. 5 years ago I never would have thought that the men would be better off they the womens team.

Legitimate concern. Not because we don't have a good team but because USD has a good team and they are hungry. I'd say it is akin to the VB programs at both schools this year. Should be a lot of fun to watch. I won't be able to attend the game in Brookings due to work but advise all others to get their tickets now.

As for Oakland's win, very impressive. More impressive, getting Tennessee to play in Oakland.
