  • Fife leaving for Michigan State

Dane Fife is leaving IPFW to become an assistant under Tom Izzo. Assistant Tony Jasick will take over.

I've said it before, but Fife was one of my favorites in the conference.

I've hated Fife ever since he bit Iowa's Duez Henderson in the shoulder during a game in Bloomington. The guy is a ticking time bomb. How long before his lack of impulse control results in something astoundingly stupid? It'll happen.
    Holy nutmeg!

Probably a pretty good move for Fife. I wish he was staying as well.

If his goal is to become a head coach in a major conference then this will in all likelyhood help the cause. He will have a proven track record as a head coach in turning around IPFW.

Look at it this way. If the Gophers (or any team for that matter) get rid of Tubby a year or two down the road and Fife was in the mix which would be a better sell to their fanbase?

      1. Dane Fife, head coach of IPFW, has turned IPFW into a winning program in the Summitt League. He played at Indiana.

      2. Dane Fife, assistant coach at Michigan State, has been an assistant unde Tom Izzo for the last few years. He also has head coaching experience in turning around a perennially struggling program at IPFW. He played collegiately at Indiana.

As a Gopher fan I would be a lot more excited about example 2 even though it is the same guy.

Not sure what he is being paid but in all likelyhood the income is probably better as an assistant at Michigan State.

I think the Minnesota job (if/when open) will go to 1 of 3 guys. either Flip Saunders, Kevin McCale or Tim Miles.

Fife, you can like or hate, but having a good young coach is good for the conference. He showed he can coach and has done a pretty good job while doing it. I don't know if its good when you are losing your head coach to be an assistant coach somewhere no matter what the level is.

I think this was a no-brainer for Fife. He gets the oppurtunity to be mentored by one of the most respected basketball coaches in the NCAA.

I agree, seemed a good coach but more hot headed the his mentor, which will catch up to him in time.
