  • UNO- University of Nebraska Omaha is in

I just read that they are in the Summit starting in 2012-2013.
They will only have 5 men's sports teams- baseball, basketball, golf, soccer and tennis.
They will have 10 women's sports. That includes most sports the league offers.

Re: UNO- University of Nebraska Omaha is in

I think UNO will be a good addition to the the league, although it is very disappointing that they are dropping football and wrestling, especially after winning three consecutive DII national titles in wrestling, and six in the last eight years.

I lived in Lincoln and attended UNL up until four years ago, and there seemed to be concern among longtime UNL supporters that UNO was growing too fast and may take some of the attention away from UNL. Enrollment-wise, there is still a wide gap with UNO at about 15,000 and UNL at 24,000, however, UNO has made an effort to become a more comprehensive school rather than a commuter college, and it seems to have improved its reputation over the last ten years or so.

I understand the economics of dropping football and wrestling. However, I wonder if part of the dropping of football was to protect the Huskers' hold on football fans in the state. Obviously a FBS UNO would still be far less of a draw than the Huskers, but I can't help but think that this thought process may have been involved.

Regardless, UNO could develop into a strong program as Omaha generally produces a lot of good athletes every year and also is relatively close to KC, which could allow for some recruits out of that area. The Creighton-UNO crosstown rivalry could be a fun one to watch in a few years.

Finally, this makes six former NCC teams moving to DI in the last ten years (approximately)-UNC, SDSU, NDSU, UND, usd, and UNO. Will the Minnesota schools (SCSU, MSU-Kato, maybe UMD) be soon to follow?

There was always some "conventional wisdom" talk that forces behind UNL wouldn't allow UNO to move to DI because of the monopoly on big-time football at UNL; but, in the end, it appears falling attendance at games and on-going financial losses associated with football killed the program.

The Western Wrestling Conference extended an invite to UNO if its wrestling program can be saved. Has anyone heard of any second-guessing on cutting wrestling? I have read the program basically supported itself through clinics, tournaments etc and the decision to drop wrestling was not necessarily financial (probably more Title IX than anything).

Not sure why but my opinion is we've linked up with enough former NCC schools and I think they're the right ones to be linked with...I'm not real excited about SCSU, Mankato, UMD joining up.

1 - fully funding wrestling would require adding roughly 20 women's scholarships, given the 66% female student ratio and assuming that dropping wrestling and football brings UNO to strict Title IX compliance.

That's 30 more scholarships and probably 5-7 more staff to keep wrestling.

2 - There's a big gap between D-2 and D-1 wrestling. Alberts said that UNO would have to invest significantly to compete at the D-1 level in wrestling, and he'd be in a position to know.

Here are a couple I found. The first is just for hockey, the second is really and NSIC board on the DII football site.
