Re: Doubleheaders for SL basketball going bye-bye

Out of curiosity, does anybody rememember what time the women used to start in the DII days double headers? I seem to remember the men starting around 8... am I way off on that?

It used to be 6 and 8. Since the transition the doubleheader times have been moved to the 5 and 730 that they are now - essentially leaving more down time in between games. I thought I heard at one point this was do to radio broadcasts, but I coud be wrong. Only thing I can think of is that they need to allow more time inbetween in case the 1st game goes into OT or something, and still allow the 2nd game to start "as scheduled". Most of the time it allows for a lull inbetween with not enough time to leave an come back, but maybe too much time to enjoy just waiting at Frost for the start of the 2nd game.

there are 4 media timeouts now that werent there in the D2 days. im sure that is the reason for the extra half hour. btw, i vote for thur/sat doubleheaders. i rarely go to a thur/mon games. if there was a thur doubleheader the chances of me going would increase.

Compared to the other member institutions from the Summit a large contingency of our fans have to drive considerable distance for games and are more apt to do it if it means they get to see two games. Brookings is just not a large enough community to draw a large crowd on a week night for a game.

The reason behind the move is to give the women more of a true "day off." If that is the case, which I believe is more probable than the "conspiracy against the home games in the Dakotas" thought, then I am for the move. They are students first.

I am all for a day off for the ladies. There should be a way to do that without hurting women's athletics in the process.

                I agree.

I wouldn't mind seeing Thursday/Saturday doubleheaders. But, the one change that I would make would be that on one night the men are first and then flip them for the second doubleheader. That way the feeling of the women's games being just a "warm-up" wouldn't be there.

If that was going to happen, it would have happened already with our Saturday double headers. It is very unlikely this wouls happen just for the sake of being "fair."

I'm all for a day off, but doubt the ladies would trade that for an empty venue. I really could care less which game was first. Just could be awkward if large contingent left after men's game. Nobody likes to admit it out loud especially with the succes our women have had, but the mens game is still much more popular, maybe little less so at SDSU.

I am going to hate mirror scheduling, but for a completely different reason than the posts I have read. One of the great things about moving to D-1 in basketball, for us, has been the opportunity to watch away games on the computer (and big screen...white board...in our case). That has been just great. The mirror scheduling will mean I can't watch (or listen ... except for trying to watch and listen on the radio at a game) the road games. But it is a done deal (yes, I know presidents have to vote on it yet...but there is no doubt the die has been cast), so will just have to get used to it.

Something I never thought of...good post. And I agree...it sucks!

Maybe the Frost Arena video board has Picture-in-Picture....I'm only dreaming! Even if it did, they wouldn't do that.

When the women were winning most of the time, they had nice crowds even though they weren't playing in a double-header. I hope that continues. Interest is going to drop (men or women) when the win/loss record suffers, particularly when the team in prior years has played so well. (And I remain optimistic this year's team will figure it out and play well by the time the conference tourney gets here.)

That's my biggest objection as well. I'd guess most of the games will be played simultaneously.

I find sitting in a cramped seat for two hours sufficent for me and somewhat glad the days of double hitters are numbered. I know that will not set well with some but it would be a dull world if we all agreed on everything.

I've suggested to Justin Sell (and plan to do the same to Tom Douple) that the league look at scheduling all games (except the travel partner games) for Thursday and Saturday for the men, and Friday and Sunday (afternoons) for the women (with a switch at mid-season to the opposite schedule if they want to). The travel partner games could be left to decide their own schedule, which could include double-headers (either a true doubleheader, or an afternoon-evening split double-header). The Sunday afternoon games would in many cases allow the teams to get out of town and back home Sunday night. This would allow us to follow ALL our games.

Don't know if that stands much chance as most of the schools in the league get no following whatsoever for their women's games, and probably won't see any value in trying this schedule. But it is worth a try. If any of you are on fan boards at SL schools and want to prod their fans to push for this idea at their schools, it could help...maybe?
