Which higher profile job would you fire?

    1. Stig who has taken the team to 4 straight playoff appearances.
    2. Nagy who has taken a team to the NCAA Tourney 2 of the last three years.
    3. AJ who has just flat-out dominated his sport.

He's been blessed with a program that is solid in the high profile sports. That's a credit to him and those that came before. He has helped things go to another level. I can see where it was on a resume where he came to a university with a down program, brought in his people, and turned things around but the things he has done far outweigh that. In many ways SDSU is the envy of FCS level schools with everything going on all over campus but especially in the athletics area.

Will somebody come looking for Sell or others in the department. I would certainly think so. That's ok. I sure don't want any of them to leave but as long as we keep attracting great people then the future at SDSU will remain bright. There is no reason to see that changing.

Most on this board would want stig gone since we have not won a NC yet.

I agree with SFRF but didn't take it as advocating for firing any of the coaches in the reference? I like Sell but you could also argue he has been here while all these people were in place. It's not like he went out and found these people to elevate these programs to a higher level. I took the part about hire/fire a key coach as a stance of leadership in the public eye. I would believe an AD that fired a HC and brought in somebody that did take a program to much higher levels would carry some weight with places looking to hire.

I don't think that's true. I think Coach Stig has strong support, on and off this board. It might get drowned out by our whimpering and whining from time to time, but it's there.

His hires in golf, wrestling and baseball have been pretty brilliant IMO. Softball and volleyball have been issues though. Not talking about coaching in particular but the programs.

I agree and hope your right. If there was a vote and one had to go my guess is most would pick him. But luckily that isn't how it works.

I think sell could say I haven't had to fire or hire them but while I was here this is what I did to improve their programs. Fundraising and building etc.

Re: UNI looking for New AD

As for the top three coaches (Stig, Nagy, Johnston), well, let's put this in proper historical perspective. NO ONE thought the football program would be competitive so soon after the move to DI. There wasn't a "football culture" at SDSU since the early '60s. It takes time to build that and given the success of the football teams the past 6-8 years things have been changing. Now, with the massive upgrade in facilities we will turn the eye of more high school prospects. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

As for men's basketball, people wondered how long Nagy would remain coach given the early dismal records and some of the problems associated with various athletes. Thank goodness he wasn't fired.

As for women's basketball, not much needs to be said because of what AJ has done and continues to do.

Which leads me to a final observation. Shouldn't AD Sell get some credit for keeping the "Top 3" coaches happy about staying at SDSU? He is obviously directing resources and support to those programs to make those coaches content. It's obvious there is mutual respect among the AD and coaches and that takes work and wisdom.

I think your leaping and I mean leaping to that conclusion. That said, coaches get fired all the time after "successful" seasons.

I am not going to get real excited. If Sell gets an offer from UNI or anywhere else, I suppose the only thing SDSU can do is counter offer, which has not happen often in the past that I am aware of. Justin leaves his department better than he found it. I remember the Argus site had recordings of final three candidates. After listening to all three, my thoughts were this: A no brainer for President Chicone. The guy from UNI is your man. And so it goes.

Montana State a prime example. I really wonder where this thread is going. Stig getting fired and Sell leaving for UNI and not getting the job because he did not fire anyone??? Crazy movements I must say.

I agree with everything you wrote, especially the last paragraph. Yes, the top 3 situation is no small feat and a feather in his cap. But so is being able to handle everything in a transition from old coach to new coach.

My original intention with bringing up firing coaches was a HUGE compliment for Sell. He has experience in every box an "interviewer" could check - except hire/fire a high profile coach. He has literally done everything an athletic director could be expected to do,

I think if he wants them, really big jobs are waiting for Sell. At the rate he's going, he could be a conference commissioner someday. He could probably triple his salary with the right consulting job. I would be surprised if he seriously considered a job back at UNI or any other mid-major unless it was for personal reasons (like being closer to home or something).

I know he feels very fortunate to have been given the leadership position at the university - he has shared this with many people. Yet, he is a young man and given his track record he will be courted by richer and more highly visible institutions. Who could blame him if a big carrot is laid in front of him? All I know is that we are darned fortunate to have him.
With all that the SDSU athletic department has accomplished, and what is yet to come with basketball facilities, etc, I can't see Sell wanted to leave in the middle of that process. I believe he wants to put him stamp on the rest of this process, and as others have said, he will then likely find himself in a position to take a real step up to a major conference gig.
