    Re: USD Coach Meierkort contract.....

Just throwing this out there - Venu Works manages the Alerus Center in Grand Forks - just as it manages the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Tom Richter at the Swiftel Center might have some connections or insight as to the condition of the locker rooms after the USD/UND game. Just sayin.

My comments about ED have nothing to do with what may or may not have happened in Grand Forks. There is a much bigger story about why he was fired if someone wants to start asking questions.

I read a lot of stuff from "sportswriters" but I don't think I'd call many of them journalists. Especially wouldn't call the Yankton guys journalists, more like USD fans that write sports stories. I've tried prompting the one that has some potential but he doesn't seem interested in reporting the story.

In today's coaching world, it's not good to have "bigger stories" going on behind the scene. I'm not saying this story is anything like "that" story, but still...

No Guts No Glory. Unfortunately in a town like Yankton if you write the story it might mean No Job.

Or it might mean a better job, hence your no guts no glory comment. Okay, let me gripe, this young journalist reported all year on how impressive USD's fb performance was, ranked highly, landmark victories over the #1 team, unbeatable at home. In reality, they were a senior laden team with a few decent victories at home but otherwise underachieving and extremely disappointing to those who were being honest with themselves. The story of Meierkort's demise has been brewing for much longer than the UND debacle. I would elaborate but this forum isn't the place to do it.

Fact, I don't even pick up the Yankton paper expecting to read a decent report, I expect to read a fluff piece that dulls the reader's mind while focusing heavily on the perceived positive aspects and almost nothing on the negative. That is how you lose readers IMHO. Anyways, just my gripe I am sure I'm overreacting. Speculation on forums or at the water cooler are usually much more accurate and flattering than the facts anyways.

A kind of a digressing question but I have not seen the name Hod Nielsen in the Yankton Paper for a while. I was wondering if he finally retired. Now there was a USD man if that is what you want. Seems like Hod played on the same USD team as Joe Foss so has to be quite elderly at this point in time.

Hod had to retire from the media a few years ago. He is still alive (I think) but not actively involved in the media in any way. He was and still is a huge USD fan and never intended for anyone to think otherwise. Certainly a SD icon and a very respectable person.

The thing about Hod was he could be critical of the institution to the north and do so in an honest manner. I enjoyed his columns.

I think unless someone has saw something or you are willing to say the name of the person that told you we should stay away from rumors. I've heard many rumors of things that went on.

I did see once, 2 players who rode stop signs down a stairway at a frat house at about 3am on a friday night when they had a game the next day. One of them sprained an ankle and was not able to go the next day. I'm not saying none of this happens at SDSU but it seemed to me, from my sources in Vermillion that these type of activities occurred regularly and that the coaches didn't care about it.

Always interesting to hear what people say about things they have not actually seen or heard themselves.

Here is the "Daily Dose" article from the Yankton Press and Dakotan on Monday, November 21st.
